There's two 830s for sale locally. Both are gas, Comfort Kings, wide front. Both are in good condition. Similar prices. One Case-o-matic and the other Dual Range. It would mostly be used on a disc mower, haybine, bush hog, or possibly roll baler. Which would be best? I guess I'm a little nervous about the Case-o-matic cause I've never used one and don't really understand them. Which would you recommend? Thanks.

The std tranny 8spds are bullet proof. The COMS are nearly the same, but you do have a converter, hyd pump, and a hyd clutch involved , but a far more productive tractor.
In my opinion a COM tranny is simpler, and better than any of the period power shift tractors,

I would go with the Standard 8 speed. The COM's are a great transmission but you need to start out at a slow rpm and when you are trying to work hay there are times you put it in gear with the engine speed up and let the clutch out. It's hard on a Case a Matic to let the "clutch" out at much of anything above an idle. If the tractors are the same, go for the gear drive tractor. Bob

I think that I would lean hard toward the 8 speed for a few reasons . First one is you are probably familiar with a dry clutch tractor . Second reason is , any competent mechanic can work on , and fix a dual range Case 830 tractor. You might have a hard time fining anyone that knows as much about the workings of a Case-O-Matic the way ACG , Rod , or Case Nutty do. Fellas that worked on these tractors when they were new are starting to get to be few and far between , as would new parts. Might be a fine tractor , but I would take the 8 speed. Think the 8 speed might be easier on gas too. Our old 530 case-o-matic really loved it's gas. Bruce

I agree with Bro Loren as I Love the COM trans,, but from what I am hearing I recommend the dry clutch unit as well for you, I have used mine for everything you stated,, I even have both trans styles here but myself I always go for the com,, I like the ability to change speeds on the go,, for example say you come to a thick spot of hay cutting or baling,, flip the com lever back to com and she will slow down, get through it and flip it to direct drive and you are back to a higher speed and it acts like a dry clutch unit,, But that is why they made both versions, there was two ways the sale/demo went, they either seen right away the advantages or COM and Loved them or they hated it and went with a dry clutch,, keep the rear end/transmission at or above the full mark at all times and they will run almost for ever with proper service,, the 830 to me was one of the best 30 series made in that hp range good luck

You are not going to like a com on a disc mower when you get in tight spots by fences and trees. You will end up with something destroyed.

why? a early one yes, a CK model can be feathered as smooth as a dry clutch at high idle, I do recommend the dry clutch for him
