Case D Water Pump

I recently purchase an after market water pump for my 1948 Case D rebuild project. The pump has a grease zerk on the top so I assumed it needed to be greased. Is it possible I damaged the pump by pumping too much grease in? Assuming grease would come out somewhere when it was full I heard a rather loud pop and was unable to turn the pump by hand until after taking off the zerk to relieve the pressure. Have I ruined it?

One shot of grease once in a while......you may have popped the seal, not ruined the
pump, but it may need the grease removed and seal re-installed. Ben

its a bearing and only one shot, 2 max is plenty. you do not grease brgs. till the grease ooses out. you might have popped the brg. side cover off. all a brg. need is a small amount of grease and it will run a long time. they will actually run hotter with too much grease.

To be on the safe side I have obtained a new water pump. I believe at least two of the bolts go thru into the water jacket. the parts manual and shop manual do not show any type of washer on these bolts. Any reason not to use some type of crush washer under them? I am planning to use Permatex Ultra Blue on both sides of the gasket. What is the best way to make sure the gasket and bolts seal?
