Diesel Oil Revisited

Whether a multigrade or straight weight the only engine oil problems I have seen occur is where a young fella put gear grease (90w) in Pops tractor, oops, or a engine with not enough oil, or oil with contamination. Clean oil of the proper specs regardless of the name on the container is more than likely OK. With so many of us using so many different oil successfully just shows most oils are fine as long as we use the correct ones and change them at proper intervals. Most of us will stick with what works for us and that is the way it should be. I use the straight 30w most all the time only because I have had good luck with it, just as others have had with multigrades. I believe in the future straight weights will be phased out. If a problem would occur and you or I would have only the oil to blame, chances are we would be open to trying something different, but until then it is unlikely many of us will change, LOL. Rod.

1370Rod - We'll said. I have around 30 tractors, varies brands. Case being the most and my favorite. I use different brands and weights of oil depending on the tractor. In my gas tractors I normally used 15w-30w, except those that are from the 30s,40s and 50's I use a straight 30 weight. In the diesels I tend to use what the manufacture recommends, today's recommendation, not when they were made. My dad use to remind me that any oil is better then none!!

You go by the specs. for the engine when it was made not current specs. In other words an oil made for a current engine does not always meet the specs of a 40 year old engine. Zinc is one example of this.
