Short Life 1070 PTO

I rebuilt this PTO about a month ago. Owners son was grinding bales and slugged the grinder killing the 1070. Son restarted the tractor, revved it open and threw the PTO in gear. It did not kill the engine right away, well not until the clutch pack had welded the plates together from slipping and getting very hot. Then of course the pack was going to turn when ever the engine was running even though the PTO was off. The new brake unit. could not hold the drum even though it tried and that fried the brake. Lesson learned by son and Pops was not happy, clear slug from machine first and then restart PTO. Rod.

Them hay grinder's are pure hell on tractors, but doesn't the grinder have a governor on it to stop the tub, to quit forcing hay into the hammer mill, when the the PTO rpm/s get so slow. That's the first thing order of business.

I got a nephew named Justin like that , .. he fried my dads 51 DC Clutch grinding hay in a artsway feed grinder,.i know about 4 -6 justins ,. and they will not listen and you cant teach them anything , sheesh

Boy that's an expensive lesson to learn I bet that youngin is gonna be doing chores til he's 50 to pay his Pop back for that one! Jay

Can't fix stupid have a step nephew the same way. told him he needed to take mechanics classes so he could at least fix what he broke.LOL he did still can't repair things but is in charge of a shop at a trucking company.

Grinding bales in a tub grinder or TMR mixer has killed many a good older tractor around here . And I always have to wonder , if you want a chopped bale , why not buy a baler that will chop the material as it is baled ? Maybe my cows are just tough , I make them chew their own hay , saves time , fuel, and repairs too. Old 100 hp plus tractors go to feed mixers and manure pumps to die.

Rod, that is the old original offset brake assembly, that has not been available from Case for years, If that was replaced on the repair last time, I'm wondering where that came from?? The new style inline brake lining worked much better and wore straight. Mel
