David Brown 990-Haybine and Hydraulics

Hello All,

I rescued a 1964 David Brown 990 from my neighbors forest, spent hours cutting the trees from around it and getting it out. I've got it running, and would like to use it to run a New Holland 488 9ft haybine and a a NH 273 or 276 square bailer. Just wondering what peoples experiences are with it?

The one problem I do have with it, is that the hydraulics don't have enough pressure to lift the New Holland 488. I haven't yet changed the filter, but will. I would like to know if the hydraulic should have enough pressure to lift the haybine? And if they do, and after changing the filter it still will not, where else should I be looking.

Thanks

It should lift the haybine with no trouble. How much pressure do you have at the remotes? Should be 2000# or so.

Do you have more pressure at higher engine speeds?

Does the 3 point hitch work?

It will play with a 273 baler, no experience with a 276. Should be fine on a 9' haybine unless you have some serious hills.

Yes, well sort of. The 3pt point hitch does work but only through valve on the left side of the seat. The leveler for the hitch doesn't seems to do anything.

I will try and pressure test the external outlets, and let you know.

Could I have a pressure relief valve that is leaking?

It should lift it. DB did have good hydraulics. A bit confusing at times but good. If you understand the settings with the levers half the battle is won. Start with the filter and maybe some tinkering on the valving in the control block. If RG weighs in he can steer you right. Was loading logs the other day with the 4600 and it surprises me every once in a while. the only knock I've heard on the hydraulics is from a farmer that had a 1200 and ran a round baler on it in the 70's-80's. he said the slamming of the cylinders of the gate on the baler eventually affected the pump in the 1200.

If you have not done so, drain trans and rear end oil. Any water in oil will cause valves to stick. DBCLUB.UK will have lots of info on David Brown hydraulics.
