Case 440H More driveline issues

Tractor driveline locked up, clutch bad. I pulled the brakes and they are not the issue. I then discovered the 4 speed tranny shift lever is stuck all the way forward, but I'm unable to pull the top cover off...thought it was the dowel pin somehow hanging up, but it comes up 1/4" and then won't come up further, even with strong prybar action.

When I rock the tractor, the brake splines rotate, so it's not an issue in final drive. The owner thinks that he did shift it when he got it, but the locked issue remains, and the shift cover issue has got me stopped.

Is there a reason the tranny cover won't come off? Any hints on how to resolve? I suspect the forks are binding somehow, and it maybe stuck in 2 gears.

I'll access a manual, as I'm sure this "bone" will need more care.

Stats:
1965 or later (because it has power steering).
Dual range with shuttle.
H means a higher top gear option.

The shift rails, which are attached to the cover, are protruding under the transmission housing, preventing you from lifting the cover. Gearshift lever needs to be in the neutral position in order to remove the cover. You might be able to use hacksaw blade,or similar tool, to get the shifter back into neutral position. The only other way, as a last resort, is to pry the lid off. Doing so will break the casting protrusions that hold the shift rails. I have had good success brazing them back, when forced to use this method. Good luck!

Since I'm at the point of Busting it off, I could try more forceful beating on the shift lever itself. Maybe if I could get a driver of some sort in on the shift fork in question, I could beat it forward and return the shift to neutral...

Maybe...

Thanks for understanding the issue..

As stated you have a rail cought under the trans web. A little patience with a peice of 1x 1/8" flat bar or decent sized screw driver, and you can slip wiggle the shifting lever and move the rail back into neutral. I have done them out in snow banks and haven't broken them. Beating on the shifting lever will do nothing, because the ball tip is out of the gate, and you need to realine that as the rail moves back to center. You don't need to force them!!!!!!! Once you have the cover off check the rail stop bushings to make sure they don't allow the rail to overshift. Iff necessary add a narrow washer or cut a longer bushing to slide over the rail and limit travel. Make sure you don't limit travel too much so it doesn't go all the way into gear.

OK, I'll give it a whirl....now that I understand the true problem.

Once I get that solved, I suspect there's more driveline issues, and that clutch that was blown while the geartrain was locked....

Hard to know just what happened, or who did what so long ago. It was destined for a scrap heap before my client rescued it....

Tried to slip the shift fork rods, but the rear gear cluster was seized on the shaft, so eventually bent the forks as it came out. Easy enough repair...

Loosened the gear and now it slides, can access neutral, and now tractor can be moved.

Will split and R&R clutch.

Thanks,
C
