CASE DC MAGNETO PARTS

I'm trying to get my grandpa's DC ready to cross the Mackinaw Bridge. I've been having trouble with weak spark, and would like to replace the points/condensor and magneto cap. I'm also going to replace plugs and wires. My question is, where is the best place to get these parts. I looked on the YT parts site, but did not find anything. Thanks

Get ahold of John Brillman who owns the Brillman Co in Virginia. he is a true magneto expert. The only one I would trust with my mags new or old.

What do you consider weak spark? On all the Case mags I've worked on I've never had to replace points or cap. Does it have cracks in the cap? File the points and regap and blow everything out and try it. Could be the magnet is weak and needs recharging. Where are you located... there is a good magneto man in E SD.

Most important, especially with Magneto ignition, is to use Non Resistor plugs and copper core wires. Most times, when there is cross arcking in the cap, it is because of resistance. The only Plug I recommend for the DC is Autolite 3116.

The old Case 4JMA mags were almost bullet proof. They had three different sets of points. Only one set is available today. The good news is you can make the new style points replace both earlier styles.

Condenser are not available. A condenser for an IHC model H4 can be made to work. I use to buy and sell about 40 Case mags a year. I only ever had one mag with a bad condenser.

There is a guy on eBay selling replacement rotors. They come without the gear. You have to reuse your old gear.

The cap you will have lots of trouble finding. Make sure the brushes are free. Clean the inside with brake cleaner. You can clean the brass contacts with a dremel tool and small wire brush.

Gaskets are available off ebay.

Coils are impossible to find. Your only option is to have your old coil rebuilt. That costs about $300.

Mainelymagnetos.com has a lot of used Case mag parts. They are pricey.

The magneto is a Case. It has the eagle cast into the housing. It has 2 caps, one on top to cover the coil, and one on the end for the plug wires. The points were very burnt, and I removed them and filed them down enough to get it running, but they need replaced. The condensor appears original, and has green corrosion on the wires. The cap is also showing a lot of wear and the spark I'm getting at the plug is a very light blue that does not jump very far. The plug wires are a solid wire. This tractor was used by my grandfather as a main work horse for many years on his farm, and the plugs and wires are what he used on it for farming.
So....to ask my question again, where do the guys restoring these tractors get parts for the magnetos.????????

Thank you for your information. I guess its back to the shop to "make what I have work!"... This is the info I was looking for, so again, thank you for taking the time to answer my question, and not criticize me with "why are you doing that?" responses. ....Scott

Two caps would make it a model 4JMA. The serial number would be next to the lower mounting slot. The number will start with either "JM" or maybe "JMA".

There are three different sellers on ebay. One sells the gaskets. One sells replacement rotors without the gear. And one sells the late style points.

The late style points can be made to fit any of the JMA magneto's.

I would sure get some new copper core plug wires and new plugs for it.

Weak spark is either the points or a bad coil.

I used to buy and sell case magnetos on ebay. When I first started. I was paying as little as $6 and as much as $35 for what looked like a complete magneto. If the magneto was not fixable I junked it. I bought and sold around 30 a year. Only junked five total. Most of them were all rusted out inside. Never did have one with a weak magnet. Some of the magnetos would be missing parts inside. If I watched I would get lucky and find NOS part on ebay and fix one. Now, Most Case mags on Ebay will hit $60 or higher. You really can't afford to part out a $60 magneto.

mainelymagnetos.com will have used parts. They are expensive. I asked once about a impulse spring. He wanted $45.00.

Here's a tip for finding parts. Search for SLICK magneto. When Case sold the mag division the name was changed to Slick. Most of the NOS parts you will find will be in SLICK boxes. Most part numbers will start with "JMA.

I have been collect NOS mag parts for six years thinking I might someday send a Case mag in and have the coil redone and magnet charged. I have a NOS distributor cap, points, impulse spring (both early and late style) and a complete impulse coupling with spring and pawl plate. All the parts are in Slick boxes but the two springs. I am still watching for a NOS rotor and NOS rotor gear. I would buy a NOS coil if one turns up and is not too pricey.

If you get really desperate a IHC model H4 magneto like used on a Farmall M or H tractor will work on your DC. A Wico X-1344 or X-894 will also work. I don't recommend a Fairbanks Morse magneto.Parts are too expensive for them and the distributor caps are well known for cracking.

Quite a few mags will bolt on, just make sure you have the timing right and go. Used Fairbank Morse mags for years.
