Case 440 H has driveline issues

I'm about to take on a repair job on a 440 H. I have read this machine is post-1965 because of the power steering.

Story goes that the rear wheels got locked somehow, and the previous owner gave it hell and exploded the clutch. Bent the starter shaft, etc. Clutch replacement looks straightforward, but there was a comment by someone that the locked rears is a "Case thing". I worked for a Case dealer in the 70's, and never heard of such a thing. This unit has the dual range shuttle, with 8 fwd, 8 reverse. It was headed for the scrap yard...... maybe there is a good reason for that.

Anyway, is there any hint that would untangle the issue with a locked rear axle? I can think of a tranny stuck in two gears, but further down the drivetrain is unknown territory for me.

thanks,
Colin

I am NOT a Case mechanical expert.....but I have had two Case tractors that had "locked" rear ends.....and I fixed them both. One was a Case 300 industrial loader/shuttle shift tractor and the other was a Case 300 wide front ag configuration tractor.

Both tractors would lock up solid on the road or running fast in the pasture.....two very different experiences. They would "lock up" when the brakes were applied. The problem was wear in the brake mechanisms in one or both sides, as well as replacement of other metal parts that could cause over application of brakes. It required new metal balls in the brake system on each side. Not sure on all the technical terms, but when brakes were applied lightly, they would "self energize" because of worn parts and apply the brakes "full lock".

I'm familiar with the metal ball/groove system on other tractors...

I can see where that might jam right hard, but enough to overwhelm the clutch? I suppose.

In the absence of any stories about gear-lock, or proof of water (ice) in the bull gears, I'll consider the brake issue.

thanks,
C

Planning to disassemble the brakes so I can get this unit on a trailer and to my shop.

Any specific info on brake disassembly? Any manuals on line or otherwise available? Looks straightforward.
