I have a 53 DC tractor, seems to have more than tractor data says, the farm test didn't test the late DC, I also have a wd45 and on 6' bush hog or 3 bottom plow the DC seems to outwork the 45, neighbor has a Jd 60, and it seems I can work with it, so did the latter dcs's have more ummph

The late model DC was meant to compare closely with the competition from the WD45 and Super M. Along with 4" aluminum pistons the DC had the stroke advantage to provide great torque. A late model DC should dyno @ 45 or a little more. Don

don ,,. you are probably rite about horsepower on the aluminum piston DC engine , but ,,. I gotta tell ya and I think You and
Dusty will agree ,..a perfectly tuned DC will deliver close to 70 horse s with just a little tuning by opening the carb jet,. but the Ol GENT will run a little warm -hot pulling a big ol disc in 2nd gear on a summer day ,if its below 30 degrees that ol boy will keep ya warm all day and never get HOT .. them ol DC s can really deliver some uuumphhh,.. and you cannot beat the power to weight ratio ,.. the wd-45 and 900 fords have to stack on wheel weights that will take all morning ,with a DC All It has to do is Lean Into a hard pull and the torque to will power is like magic,..

Jim, you are 100% correct. I'll take a DC's torque over a 400 any day. They should have given the 400 an extra 1/2" stroke. That would have been a beast. Don

Jim you must let me know what do you, adjusting the metering screw or installing a larger jet, 70 sounds amazing lol, the chains won't come apart with that kinda power, not that I need it but another 5 or 10 wouldn't hurt right ;)

What are you feeding that WD45? Sounds anemic to me. Where I was raised a WD45 hooked to the right equipment would hang with a 70 JD all day, leave a 60 in the dust.

engine timing is very important,.but I am not certain where mine is set ,so you can try what I do and if you cant recognize some real fighting power over the original carb settings then you may have to play with timing .I did no drilling or alteringthe carb otherthan adjusting the screw settings I gotta tell you I have seen a few tame DCs that did not have the gonads to really work hard and strong ,they would plug along all day in hot weather and never get hot,,. and I suspect alittle tweekin on the distributo or magneto timing mite make adifference ,, always mark or take a GOOD VISIBLE pix of original settings before tinkering .also a must , THE ZENITH CARB must be in top clean running condition ,,. that said ,on my zenith carb I adjust the lower screw out at idle til it begins to have a kackle in the exhaust and smokes a little rich, normal setting is hotidle screw in til motor needs choke and or starts to falter then adjust back out a half turn or alittle more to get a clean exhaust and a responsive motor when gunning it . gunning the throttle should be instant rev up ,. also the top angle screw I adjust out another turn , normal setting is 1 and 1/2 half turnsout from the seat,, if all sounds beefy then you should have a few extra horses ,. if it just seems like it is no different and lethargic , then it is time for experimenting ,aGAIN , IS THE CARB CLEAN AND RUNNING RITE? if not nuthin will improve til those issues are resolved .check your valve clearances ,and the timing ,. you can learn all those values by looking in the archives at the very top of the forum page ,.type in DC timing,. as a start,.. there is so much useful info , here that this forum site is addicting ,,. guys like DC Tom , John ]Saeli , don Rudolph and don Livingston, tom Stanley are real good gurus to listen to their writings ,.,.dc tom has been deceased for about 3 yrs or more , but his wisdom lives on in the archives ..

also going to a petronix electronic ignition will adda few horses too,. but the old gent wont be pristine ,, to the perfect restore police lol ,.
