Case Engineering Mysteries

What a process it's been. 11 years of finding parts, etc. Although there was a 5 year gap in the middle where I didn't touch it after my wife died. Anyhoo, after swapping out the points for a Pertronix electronic ignition she fired right up. 28 years since I've heard that sweet sound! Here's a sample of Case 800 1958 engineering - the pic is the swivel end of the COM cooler line that ties into the bottom of the converter housing cover. It was leaking, because it had about a 1/16" of end play. I suspected maybe an internal o'ring but how to replace it? So I lopped the fitting off and flared the end of the tube and went with a 1/2" pipe to 5/8" male flare out of the housing cover and all is good. Then of course I had to split the old fitting to satisfy my curiosity. The white piece is a flat plastic washer and the black is the o-ring. How in the world did they put that together at the factory?

I suspect the factory would have had a funnel shaped die and a press to push those seals down in one swift move. Without the right tool, some of those internal seals are nearly impossible to install.

Contrats on getting it running again!

I suspect the bell on the left end was swaged (crimped) to a smalled diameter after all the pieces were in place.
