VAC-14 Ring Pinion Backlash

In reworking the brakes on my VAC I messed around with the carrier bearing shims, not knowing the left side is to be left alone so as not to disturb ring & pinion preload. Well, I have no idea what the original shim count was. I just moved/removed them till there was no play in the carrier bearings.

The tractor will rock back & forth a half inch when not running and in low gear. Interestingly my SC has the same amount of rock (but I realize it is chain drive).

Do any of you know if my VAC half inch rock indicates things are not too tight? I don't want to burn things up. And I assume adding a shim to the left side would increase my "rock"??

Hopefully I am making myself clear here.

Thank you,
Glenn F.
