getting rod back into cylinder on backhoe?

is their a trick or 'right' way to get the rod back into the cylinder with new seals on it? It is the cylinder that raises the boom on a case 31 backhoe.

Lube it Very well with hyd oil,, line it up work it in as far as you can, then I use a soft dead blow hammer to "tap" it in

certain cylinders I have used a ring compressor to help them, I also Always make sure there is not a sharp edge in the bore from the gland working in the barrel

wrap the seals with black electrical tape and put a hose clamp around them to compress them back in shape, leave alone for awhile then remove clamp and tape, install the rod using petroleum jelly to lube the seals and barrel
