Case 410 Brake Job

Hello All! This is my first post to this forum so please bear with me. :) I'm replacing the brake seals on my Case 410 gas tractor. I've got 2 replacement seals, part #A32015. The housings I've got have two seals per side. I've read some posts here which say to use two seals per side and one which said that only one per side is needed. If you've done it with only one per side did it work out fine, or should I go with two per side? I also don't know which way the seals should be oriented. If I use two should they be oriented the same way or in opposite directions? I'm also going to have to adjust the shims under the housings, since these aren't the originals. Any suggestions on how to do that will be much appreciated.

Welcome to the forum!! Well first off on the shims. Unless you plan on adjusting the backlash on the ring and pinion gears do not add, remove, or move shims from one side to the other. This will throw the backlash on the ring and pinon off and also mess up the preload on the differential bearings. Replacing the seals does not require adjusting the shims.

For the seals always press on the solid side of the seal. Don't press on the side that has as a gap between the rubber part and the outer metal piece. I put two of the same seal on each side of my 400 only because I pressed the first ones in too deep and they didn't seal on the differential shafts and leaked. Adding the second seal on each side was an easy fix to the problem. One seal on each side will work if you only press them in deep enough to seal on the raised portion of the differential shafts.

Unfortunately, I have to adjust the shims. The shims and housings are off a different tractor. The original parts were lost in a robbery. I have an I&T manual, but it doesn't give much detail about how to do it.

What did you use to press the seals in? I'm a little nervous about distorting them getting them into the housing.

Yep the IT manual isn't very good at explaining the procedure. If for are going to do a lot of work on your tractor then I would purchase a copy of the Case shop manual. It is much more detailed and worth the investment. Since you are starting over don't worry about the seals at this point. Getting the preload on the bearings and the backlash on the ring and pinion gears is a trial and error process that will require you to take the brake housings on and off multiple times to trade shims around and you could damage them if you are not careful. Unfortunately I do not have the ability to scan images or I could scan the pages from my manual. Where are you located at in Iowa?

Hi Eli! I'm south of Dubuque. I picked up a reprint dealer's service manual on ebay, but it only covers the engines. I just now noticed that it starts at section C. I'm not sure if I need a second manual or if this one was put together wrong?? I watched a couple of youtube videos of the lash being set on automotive differentials. It helped to see where the indicator was set up, and I think I at least got the gist of the procedure. Do you have any recommendations on the service manuals?

I got my copy from external_link in Geneva NY. It is a reprint of the original but is worth it.

I got mine from external_link. Well worth the money. I'm over in central Iowa. Keep us posted as you progress.
