Noisy rear axles.

1945 DC4 has noise coming from the rear axles that has progressively been getting worse. Sounds like really dry or worn out bearings. Also vibrates the tractor a fair bit and rattles your teeth. I greased the fittings on each axle but that has not made any difference. Really bad in fourth gear, not too bad in third, pretty much not noticeable in second.

Are these bearings hard to change? Are they even available? Tractor doesn't get much use, not sure if that is what caused the problem.

This is the answer I got from

Sometimes you get a interesting mix of lube in that rear axle. You may want to consider changing it. I've seen that old stuff
actually "channel" as the drive sprockets move thru it, similar to a 30 below morning when you're dealing with roofing tar like
consistency in that axle. Moisture can cause the level to raise, giving you a false reading of the actual amt of lube available.

I never even checked the fluid, I will definitely look at that. I don't have a manual, where is the plug to check?

check drive chain adjustments? you say worse when going faster, chain riding up a sprocket? just a checkpoint

oh man , uh -oh rlester, I sure woulda done that FIRST before I came here with a question ,LOL ,./ you mite get ribbed a little by these good hearted guys,,.. there is a bearing on the pto shaft that will fail and starve for oil if the level is not maintained at the correct level on a DC and Sc ,..mite be best to flush and put in new oils, and get a couple qts of lucas hub sealer for your tranny seals,. if you are luky they will swell up and keep the oil where it needs to be

Let the ribbing begin.. ;-)

I bought a 20L pail of gear oil and it took ALL of it to fill it to the plug. Noise did not go away. Might have changed it a bit, but there is no doubt that its very loud in fourth gear. Can't hear it in second, third is noticeable.

Not going to fix it at this point, too many other projects on the go but I will eventually have to look at this. If I ever put it in a parade or something I might have to fix it. I hope its not too bad of a job and the parts are hopefully available.

This is assuming it is the bearings. What are the grease fittings for on the axles? I did about 25 pumps of the grease gun on both sides, no change.
