1945 Case DC4 mag problems.

My Grandfather gave me his well maintained and always parked under a roof DC4 8 or 9 years ago before he passed away. I don't have a farm, just an acreage so the tractor doesn't get used much at all. I fire it up a few times a year and drive it around the yard to keep it running.

The last few years it has not been running right and is only running on two cylinders. New plugs don't change anything and I suspect the mag cover is defective. When I pull the wire out of the mag for one of the dead cylinders it arcs to the mag cover body at the very edge of it. Doesn't seem right. Only cylinders 1 and 2 are firing properly.

Can't seem to find a source online for a Mag cover, are they available? Is it possible, there are other issues with the mag?

(quoted from post at 21:38:15 07/24/16) Tubacase47 in the post below regarding the Case SC Distributor said he has a rebuilt one for $100.

Is Tubacase47 able to ship to Canada? Hate to replace the whole unit but if I can't find a cap I might have to do that.

Don't give up yet. How are the wires? Only use copper core wires. If your wires say "Radio Suppression" or "Silicone", get them off. The only plug I recommend for your DC is Autolite 3116, an extended tip, non resistor plug. Electricity will take the path of least resistance, so if there is any resistance to a particular plug, the electricity will find a short-cut to somewhere. After you are sure of your plugs & wires, and you have the ability, remove the cap and clean the inside of the cap and rotor to remove any carbon tracking and then try it.

Thanks for the tips on the plugs, I will get a set of those. I was desperate to get the thing running so I have a mix of resistor type plugs in there right now.

The wires are copper core, but it looks like Grandpa made them himself out of extension cords! There are two strands coming out, one with a white insulator the other with black. I laughed when I saw this, it was so typical of him to make something up and get things running.

I deal more with automotive stuff and have a very good automotive wholesaler I deal with. Is there a part number for a copper core set of wires I can ask for?

I'll clean the cap inside and out with brake cleaner and see if that helps.

The only set I'm familiar with is the Tisco Made in USA CPN12259 Set. Several years ago we had problems with some imported wires. My thought is that you get proper plugs & wires installed, might even have to use a pencil erasor to remove the tracking, and your problems will be solved. Good luck!!

Thanks guys, proper plugs, new wires and cleaned up the mag cover and it runs PERFECTLY. Smoked a little blue the first couple of minutes until it warmed up driving around the yard for a while. Once warmed up the exhaust was totally clear.

Set the carb screw to 2.25 turns out and it can start out in fourth gear no problem.

Going back out to check the rear end fluid level.

Thanks again, this forum is excellent and saved me a lot of trouble.

it will not get to running real good unlees you run 5 gallon a week thru them gassers to keep them happy , healthy and sassy .. on the motors that are sidelined a lot and just don't get much action , I use a qt of atf , or 303 hydraulioil ,.. it seems to clean as it runs and a little puff of smoke don't hurt a thing ,.the more these gassers run the better ..
