SC - died in parade

Half way through the parade yesterday I started to get the feeling my 45 SC was going to die. It started missing and then just quit.
I've had this happen before when I've been running for a while and when its hot out. The engine was not overly hot (120) but it was a hot day and in an area of no breeze.
So I was pushed off the street into a parking lot to get out of the parade route. I took the cap off the magneto to check for moisture or whatever and it was dry and looked pretty good but it was very hot to the touch.
So after waiting about a half hour I got her going again but it was kind of on the edge.
Drove a ways to catch up to my other tractors at the end of the parade route and then proceeded to drive home when it did the same thing. Left it sit for a couple hours on the side of the road and went back and it started right up.
I know fuel was not the problem so I'm thinking my mag is overheating.
Is this a problem anyone else has had?
Any suggestions or ideas?

First I'd replace the condenser, then think about the coil it may be heat soaking and the old internal insulation breaking down. My feeble thoughts. Those 2 things are accessible by removing the cap

too wide a point gap will cause heating. FM and many others use .020" point gap, however many others like IHC, wico and others use .013". the bright blue will happen at or slightly under correct setting.

I coated the internals of the tank years ago with a gas tank coating system because of a problem like that.
Would run a short time then quit.
This seems to be more of a spark problem but I'll check the tank to make sure.

Isn't that the truth! I also believe the likelihood and severity of a major breakdown increases exponentially with each mile further from home you get!

I think the same thing applies when ya run out of gas at the Farthest end of the field..!!!

Why does that seem to be the Rule..?..!

lol , aint thaT the truth ,. never happens to my money eating 4020,. but the CASES SEEM TO BE CURSED, sC especially, has been left on the side of the road way too many times , once the radiator sprung a horrible leak , another group of times the manifolds was sharing ases thru a common hole that was not factory , the warmer it got the worse it ran til it finally quit al together and hitchhiked home, after changing points condenser, coil andno great improvement I found the craked manifolds ,. what tom rs needs is a magmneto coil rebuild ,,. I do have a hot mag that case built for airplane engines that I got from Liberty last yr at the CASE EXPO ,.. the cap will need to be changed,. I am in Louisville ky area , email is open

shux I meant to tell about the time I had the 800 all dolled up waiting in the line up for the heritage weekend parade at Lanesville, ind// had a 24 ft wagon load of folks to haul ,, I was driving the tram tractr hauling folx from one end to the other before the parade with a new massey ,, and as luck would have it the 800 needed to be moved up into position ,, no problem said a pal of mine who stuck his boot in the clutch spool rod and bent it but somhow he got the 800 to move up ,,, maybe he bent the rod getting down , anyway come parade time I parkt the shuttle tram and hitched a ride with a cop to the other end of town just in time to fire up the 800 and get movin into the lineup ,, the motor was willing but.... all I could get was a slight jerk out of any gear , the folx in the back were starting to get ancxous , than I noticed the bent rod,,. I summoned some heavy boys with steel handz and I pulled up with a nylion strap to get the rod reasonably straight,,. and tried the tranny and she worked good as new ,,. and stuckn the tranny in 7th and rode theparade at a nice 1200 rpm and occassionaly woyuld hold thew brake for the ying and yang of the parade .

however ,. that s where us hillside farmers got the edge.. lol .. especially with the flat bottom gas tanks on the 530- 630 730,830 and dc, sc,, if they are gassers , we allnknow diesels are another matter . at 1st sputter , if the gas line outlet is on the uphill side , I simply turn around and head for the barn or gas tank ,, always seem to make it because there is enuff gas sloshed over on the downhill outlet ,, I have been known to back all the way to the gas if that was the way the hill favored ,, beats walking ..

dont think so , but honestly don't know . mags are like injection pumps to this illiterate dum farmer,,.. lol,. truly they are not as bad as a pump ... you mite search research info ARTICLES for rebuild info ,,I think there is some info there . or perhaps the archives ,, type in magneto and you will find lots of info and serveral who rebuild ,, there was a good one in carthage mo , that helped me 25 yrs ago with the mag on pops 51 dc

Yes,There is a condenser in a magneto.

What brand of magneto is on your SC?

Originally they used a Case magneto. Sixty years later it could have anything from a Fairbanks,Wico,or even an IHC.

If the coil feels sticky to touch it is going bad.

I would agree on the coil. Seen the same thing a few times. On the ones I use around the farm I put on distributors.

It has the eagle on the side so I'm assuming it is a Case.
I'm at least the 3rd owner so prior to 1994 I have no idea of its history.
I'll check the coil windings.

(quoted from post at 23:28:36 07/05/16) It has a magneto so I don't think there is a condensor, is there?

Id look in to finding a DELCO 1111411 vertical distributor from a farmall M or H I found one on ebay for 50 dollars tune-up parts are still cheap for my 52 SC. Mine had a Fairbanks Morse Magneto on it cost 50 dollars just for one part of a two part cap. coil was 80 some dollars. I got rid of it to rich for my blood. Of course the choice is yours.

That would be a Case model 41 magneto. Parts are hard to find. The coil has to be sent to a mag shop and be reconditioned. Costs about $250.00. Condenser are not available. You can make a condenser fit from an IHC model H4.

Twice I have remodeled a coil for a FAIRBANKS MORSE type J magneto to fit the Case model 41.
