500 Diesel question-not running right

A friend has a big 500D. The heads have been re-done. It starts real good and runs good untill it warms up. Then it kinda sputters and pops thru the exaust and runs rough? Any ideas? He checked the timing. When he re-done the heads he did not remove the power cells. Dick

I was thinking they were sticking in the guides, maybe.

My 2 bits are with John. Common problem w/older engines and newer technology. You can't fit guides to one and half thou like its an emission sensitive Chev........
