Powershift problems... Case 970

Hey guys, worked on my Case 970 - early model (yellow). Changed fluids and filters and pump. Starts easily but seems loaded in powershift 1st - 2nd and 3rd runs evenly with smooth powershifts into those two. Trans pressure is in the green. Pushing in clutch stops the tractor like I applied the brakes (after a short trip in first gear) and engine will stall in powershift reverse when clutch is released. The relief valves were missing in the filters and oil a bit milky... noticed trans oil was foamy in the sight glasses. Thoughts? Brian Case farm kid

The most common problem that occurs when the by-pass valves are missing from the filters is dirty oil getting pumped into the powershift control valve and causing pilot spools to stick open. The symptoms you described are caused by a problem with C-3, most of the time being the pilot spool. I would start by removing and cleaning the entire control valve. The trans oil needs changing also if milky and new filters again. Moisture in the oil causes the element to swell not allowing proper oil flow which forces more oil to by-pass pushing crud through the system again. Rod.

Thank you for the steer - the service manual does not specifically deal with this but does detail the removal and cleaning of the valve body. I was told it worked well till the issues started. No parts dropped out with the milky oil (some threads here detailed some nasty stuff that happens in the trans). I was a bit ticked to see the missing relief valves... am also hoping for any other advice if the other guys want to chip in. Brian Case farm kid
