770 I purchased at auction 2 years ago, no brakes, power shift works, pto works, power steering works, I changed hyd fluid after I bought it, put in Hy-Tran Ultra, purchase a couple relief valves for the filters from salvage yard, those were missing, would explain the new hydraulic pump that was installed before the farm sale. I leave tractor at my brothers place, he farms a little more ground than I do, have a 15 year old nephew operates it once in a while, only answer I get when I ask about the brakes, "They stopped working" I baled hay for a couple hours yesterday, New Holland 273 with thrower, 90 plus degrees out, noticed smoke coming from under the platform, like hot oil, I used this tractor summer of 2015, did not have smoke issue. Ideas where to start looking?

parking brake was left on,,, or the brake just did not release for some reason, the oil smell can be if the discs hve oil on them

did not smell hot brakes, when nephew was 13, he drove tractor to my house, 4 miles, parking brake was left on, definitely were warm...

Check to make sure the brake arms on top of the brake housing is going up and down as brakes are applied and released. If the pivot pin is froze the brakes will seem not to work and will not release properly causing a heat buildup from dragging. Rod.

Take the cover off on the hood ahead of the steering wheel and check the fluid level in the two brake master cylinders on the firewall. Neighbor had no brakes on one wheel and I found one master cylinder out of hydraulic fluid. He's had the tractor for 30 years and didn't know he had to check the level once in a while.

more info on lack of brakes, I added 2 gallons of hy-tran, was a bit low, no changes, I did use tractor last night to bale another couple hundred small squares, when the tractor was cold, shift the power shift to second, motor lugged down, like something was binding pretty bad, move back to first, no problem, move back to second, just about snub the motor, move it to third, no problems. Once the hy tran warmed up, after about 100 bales or so, I could shift to second and seemed to not affect it, I did notice some light smoke from under the platform, I am thinking I may soon have a major power shift issue... suggestions?

it sounds like you have a pilot spool stuck in the powershift valve,, I recommend fixing before you run it at all anymore or you may need a complete rebuild

how would I go about checking the pilot spool? Sounding like I may need to seek someone locally who may have more experience in these tractors...

Rod,

when I push pedals, the lever at top of brake chamber does move up and down, must not be allowing actuator to expand to the brake disc?
