800 speedometer cable

Getting close to finishing the 800 and ran into something I hadn't expected. Pulled the speedometer cable and found it runs far down into the transmission case. Looks like a cable housing is part of the drive and at first glance it doesn't come out through the top hole. Maybe it does? Am I going to have to pull the cover to replace the cable? Have a cable and repair kit from John Saeli but haven't talked to him yet.

If the cable is not twisted off at the bottom you can simply slide the long tail of the cable down the tube in the tranny and engage it into the square drive socket of the spedo drive on the end of the pinion. If the cable broke of down there, you need to have a long arm and skinny hands and a flex head 3/8ths ratchet to get the drive head off the end of pinion so you can pull the broken end out of the drive. NOT an easy task. I posted about this issue on my 931 back last winter.
Once the peice is removed, slide the drive core down the tube into place, attach the outer cable housing to the tranny and then cut the drive cable off at the proper length and crimp the end on the top.

Thanks for the help. My cable is stuck in the tube. The tube comes up through the hole opening and something on the end keeps it from coming any further. Sounds like I may have a bigger job than I planned on. I'll look up your 930 discussion. Up to now, my parts book and 400 service manual have gotten me through.

Loren did a search on this and was not able to find the thread. Can you remember the thread title/

thanks
