Battery for an SC and a DC (6V)

I can't seem to find a good battery that will last.
Any suggestions on a really good brand of 6volt battery?

Also, they sit a lot and I have kept a trickle charger on them...1 amp maintainer float job. After a while this seems to "cook" them down and the water level gets low.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts on this.........

I had trouble keeping a battery in my M Farmall, was using Napa group 2 & would have to replace about every year, so I switched to a strongbox battery from John Deere, when we went to get it my son picked up the Deere battery & noticed a considerable weight difference, that was 2 or 3 years ago & that battery is still in there

Super common problem, be sure you're trickle charger is a "float" charger, not just a 1 amp unit. The float part is designed for continuous usage. Otherwise I charge all my batteries once a month year around (if they're not being used) seems to help. I leave the small one on for 24 hours and rotate thru the old cars, tractors lawn mower, 4 wheelers etc. Heavy makes a big difference in the number of plates internally, which usually equates to quality. My Skidsteer is a NH/John Deere 6675 with the OE battery from 2000 and it pops right over, every day, year round. It hurts the checkbook sometimes, but if it lasts.........

I think the trickle charger is your problem, if you do not have any drain just leave them. If it gets really hot where you live that could contribute to the short life. We have a Farmall C that sits all winter in the cold and I get 4-5 years out of a battery with no trickle charger.

I am using a Exide 6 volt (commerical series) in my 8N, installed in 2012, I have not added water to date. I have had the tractor since 2007, this is the second battery, I don't recall the brand of the first one. I do not use a trickle charger since I use the tractor year round. On the batteries I do use trickle chargers - I do not leave them connected.

The local TSC carries the Exide line. I was there tuesday and happened to look at batteries. The 6 volt (625 CCA) was $79.99 and a similar size 12 volt in the commerical series was also $79.99.

I am not saying the Exide battery is the best and will fix your problem - in my opinion any battery will fail early if not charged properly by the tractor and maintained in a charged state.

Excite batteries are junk. I only use Carquest 6volt batteries.

90% of my 6 volts have lasted eight years or longer.

I don't leave a trickle charger on mine. If I don't use the tractor in the winter, I bring the battery in doors and charge it occasionally. Make sure generator is charging with tractor is running. I agree, I have not had very good luck with Exide brand. Last one I bought from Advance Auto, don't know who made it.

I have oem Case batteries in most everything. A little more expensive than after market but well worth the price difference. They last forever. Even the local Interstate battery guy says Case batteries are about as good as they get.
