930 differentials

So I finally got back to working on the transmission swap on my 930. Tore the differential from the donor apart to inspect all the parts and found that the roll pins that hold the pins through the spider gears sheared off on 3 of them. The pins are shot and the holes in the carrier are worn so that the pins are loose in the bores. So I tore the original transmission apart and it's the same thing sheared off roll pins and the spider gear pins are worn and the holes in the carrier are worn out.

I'm guessing that this is caused by spinning one tire, a lot. Was this a common problem? I'm guessing I can get the pins and thrust washers. I could get a salvaged carrier but I'm concerned that it will have the same problem with wore out holes. I've considered having the holes in the carrier bored out and have bushings made to get the proper diameter holes for the pins. Is there a carrier from a different series that would fit and be more durable?

Thanks,

Eli

That's too bad! That rear looked good. My local salvage yard has several differentials on the shelf that
I can check out for you if you decide to go that way.

That was a fairly common problem in some areas of the country depending how the tractors were used of course. I think those diff wheels are the same on 9-1030's and 9-
1070's but I would check the parts book and ser. no. to be certain. Seems to me the large thrust washer used on each side of the wheel might have been different on some.
I do have a NOS brass set of pins for a 1175 which would work in the tractor if you are interested. Those pins do not gaul and shear roll pins like the steel ones. Rod.

I have also seen this before and had to
replace the differential wheel spider
gears and install the new brass pins on
my 1170

Rod I would be interested in those brass pins if there interchangeable with the 930 pins. Is there a way to get a hold of you?

Jon I was not surprised by what I found in both differentials. From what I have found in my research these old girls were worked pretty hard in there day. Especially since 3 of the 4 axles I have are replacements. I would be interested in a carrier if they have a good replacement. I want to use this tractor for plowing, blowing snow, etc. when I'm done so I want everything to be mechanically sound and I don't want to have to go back in there again.

Thanks for the help guys,

Eli

Call Larson imp at 763 689 1179 and ask them
what they have. I know they have several
units in the shelves, but ask them to check
to make sure they are not like yours. I
didn't look close at them when I was up
there. I can go and check them out next time
I'm home but that won't be til around the
18th
