Linda and I were headed out this evening for what we call date night. The youngins are all on their own, so out the door we go. She asked me what was the purpose of collecting old iron. Did you not get enough of that when you were a youngster? I told her that plowing, disking, dragging ,and baling hay, as a young man was not work for me. It was fun. I always liked tractors. Didn't always get to ride what I wanted, but it was better than the alterative. WALKING. The wife then asked me what the loss of round bales were to square bales. I drew a blank. She wanted to know if I needed a pill, since I have never been without an opinion or thought. . A Barley Pop will be fine Linda. SOOOOOOOO,what is the percentage of loss in a round bale. Can't leave her without a response! Barley Pops all around. Chuck

Round bales of hay left out side for a day two , or even through one rain will have minimal damage . Big round bales left out for the whole winter can lose between 10 30 % of their feed value . Square bales left out , unprotected , will be junk after a couple rains , water goes right through them . I wrap the bales that are going to be kept outside with stretch plastic . Bales stored in this manner have zero feed loss.

I got friend's who have about 300 mother cows, and the yearling's they almost fatten out, and they have the calves also, But they put up so much extra hay, it seems there always feeding 1 yr old hay, but they have 25 sets of twins every year, and they got more money than i ever will, so they must be doing some thing right. But they always have there round bales stacked up!
They could almost go a full year, with out putting up any hay!!!

Some guys figure it takes 25% more hay ground if baled with rounds and stored outside versus squares stored inside out of the weather. Last year it was impossible to put up good hay and we had more spoilage than usual. Some just grind it but I am not sure feeding moldy hay is the best idea either. Many also grind the net wrap or plastic twine but dead cows that were examined by a vet have been found full of the stuff. Hay wrapped in tubes is becoming more popular but no one near here does it yet. Looks like a good idea I'd like to try.
