600B Shifter Overtravel

If memory serves the 1958 600B had an issue where the shifter could travel beyond the detent and cause a stuck shift rod. I believe this has occurred on mine as I'm attempting to remove the shifter and cover plate per the factory manual instructions and it seems to be hung up on the rear edge of the trans housing and will not come out. Any help on getting that rod shifted forward to remove the cover for repair? Thanks to all.

Jay,
About all you can do is slide a thin bar inbetween the shift cover and tranny housing and move the ofending rail, (usually the reverse rail) back to nutral. DON'T force the cover, you can break it, quite easily. Be patient, it will come out after a while.
I had that problem on my 440. I cut a pipe bushing that slid over the rail between the fork and rail tab on cover to prevent an over shift.

I am with Loran, the reverse rail is usually the culprit, that and the roll pin that prevents the cover moving fwd to clear the rail from under the housing edge. I use the rule from a combination square to fish around under there and push the rail fwd. Also note the travel limiting spacers on the rails.

Here's another pic that may be clearer. This is a 300B cover, same setup as 600B. I pulled it last week to replace the speedometer cable. Note the reverse rail pushed fwd just enough to clear the housing for a straight up lift. The roll pin can be a pain too if the cover hasn't been off for a long time. I have used plastic felling wedges to break a stubborn pin loose. Very careful here like Loren said casting isn't as strong as it appears.
