Hey Tom - I changed the oil in my 1030 and filled it with Mobil delvac 15-40 oil. Figured if it was good
enough for my newer tractors it should be good enough for the old 1030. Neighbor (who is a Case man from
birth) said not to run anything but 30w in the 1030's. Said 15w-40 is not heavy enough for a 1030. OK for a
930 but not 1030. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks a lot - Bob

That's what I thought too but just wanted to hear it from someone like you as well. Thanks a lot for the reply - Bob

Been running 15/40 oil in my 1030 and all the Case tractors since it came out in the middle 70s. Never had a Case engine use oil. Neighbors with JD 4430 and 40 and IH 1066 said the dealer said only 30 weight in those tractors and was not uncommon to use 1-2 quarts a day.

Any Case diesel that I own gets 30w. That is what Case called for in them and they never changed their recommendation because of the amount of crank bearing surface area in those engines. Others can do as they like, I will stay with 30w. When I get a Magnum it will get 15-40 because that is what is called for in the CDC engines. As far as the argument about how today's 15-40 oil is is just as good as 30w under a heavy load I don't believe it also the zinc is all but gone and that's what protected cam followers and cam lobes among other things. You need an oil that meets the specs of that engine, newer ratings are not always better for an older engine.

When your 1030 was built, no one had a 15W40 designed for Heavy Duty Diesel use. Hence, no recommendation for 15W40,; straight weights were all they had. Studies have proven that most all of engine wear occurs on start up. That was the reason for a multi grade, the ability to get picked up by the pump and circulated sooner like a 15W, yet protect & lubricate like a SAE 40. We use 15W40 in all our tractors, Gas & Diesel.

Bobl, I am no engineer but I agree with Brutus on this. I still work my stuff like a red headed step child. The main crank journals are smaller than the cummins hence the need for the oil.
Back in college I took a class called fuels and lubes, the chart we were given exhibited the broad range that an oil could fall in and still have the characteristics that would qualify it as a ____ multigrade. Hence a 15w40 could actually be 20 weight at the low end and 35 weight at the high end. HTH Tom

Hey Brutus, kinda set in your own ways aren't you,,,,,, Kinda like someone else I know! HeHe.

I use what is called for in any particular engine. My F150 takes 5-20,my dodge Cummins takes 15-40, ect. There was 15w40 in the 80's when case made the 90&94 series but they never changed to 15w40. multi weight might be adequate for tractors that don't get used hard anymore but I question if 15w40 is equivelant to 30w at operating temps, others can do as they like, I guess I figure if it isn't broke don't mess with it.
