Torque test on Tractor Axles.?

A good friend had an axle break off his 1030, it has duals on it, and he was working ground about 4mph when it broke off. I don't know how or what method Case used to rate the rear axles on a tractor, could someone explain what strength or torque test they used.?

Thanks, Mike

1030s had the reputation for weak axles around here but that is the first I've heard of anyone saying the 930s were weak. The 930 is looked upon much more favorably then the 1030.

This is interesting as my 930 project tractor has had both rear axles replaced at some time. The donor housing that I got to fix the transmission has had one replaced as well. Where do they break off? I'd like to know where to check for cracks before I put things back together.

The dealer I worked at had a customer break an axle on an 870. The answer we got from Case was the 870 axles were "not designed for duals". After that he ran less air pressure in the duals than the inside tires and didn't have more problems.
A friend of mine says he has put 970 axles on a 930. I am parting out a 970 with 3.5" axles that I saved from going to China.

You think it is a torque issue, bouncing, bad luck, or flex/bend issue?

Kinda has me concerned on this 1030 I bought this spring(1070 engine). I have been following the 5mph rule(actually haven't pulled anything that she wouldn't pull in 5th), but she has way more snot that a factory 1030.

Broke an axle on a '61 930. Was running duals and back at that time I was told they were the culprit. Only happened once. Broke off next to the transmission case.

They will snap right at the housing where
they are turned down to the smallest size.
My dad broke the axles on our 730 ck 3 times
while using a 3pt cultivator with duals. We
always ran the dual tires soft, about 8-10
pounds and didn't have any issues on the
larger tractors.

I have broken many axles on 830, 930, and VAC.All of them were crystalized at the break. Duals do not help, but if they are crystalized they will break no matter what. The VAC axles broke carrying a belly mower. Watch the Comfort King fenders that are bent from the weight of the tractor being held up by the fender when the axle breaks. I have never broken a 70, 90, or 94 axle.

Thanks for all the input guys, he was pulling a 15' Glencoe field cultivator with roller behind that. Don't think the load was to much, we used to pull a 17 1/2 ' field cultivator alone with no problem.?

My brother bought a new 2290 and broke both axles the first year, but they have been good since on a tractor that spent it's entire life overworked and over loaded.

Yep, i could see the front door of the Case shop, from English class when i was in high school, kept the case dealer busy.

the 30 series axles were hardened all the way through wicth made them brittle and subject to breaking. the 70 series axles are the same dimensions but are case hardened leaving the centers soft to prevent crystalizing. mike

So now I'm curious. I wonder if the replacement axles were heat treated all the way through like the originals or just the outside like the 70 series on up?
