400 Super Diesel

I learned of a 400 Super today. I haven't seen it and probably won't for awhile.
They said the pump would leak back when parked. They had to shut the fuel off when parking it or fuel ends up in the oil.
The tractor locked up tight one day. Presumably because of the thin oil?
Question #1: Can it be easily made to run again? Motor work? Pump work? Too much $$$ to fix?
Question #2: Without knowing more or seeing it, what does your gut say its worth? Scrap price?

Probably spun a bearing.....moocho dinero. I probably have a crank and stuff for it. Pump parts are somewhat hard to come by, depending what it needs. I think I wore a hammer out trying to get this engine loose....might have to look for a doner. Can't believe it is stuck so bad, I'll keep trying. My 930 propane that sat in the rain for 10 years wasn't this bad.

More than likely the seal in the transfer pump on the injection pump has failed leaking fuel into the engine oil. It is an easy and relatively cheap fix. Both my 400 and 400 Super did this. If your lucky a set of bearings and possibly a crank grind may fix the engine. If its deeper than that John Saeli sells all the parts for a rebuild. Depending on the condition of the rest of the tractor it may be worth it to fix it. I'd say scrap price plus the condition of the tires should buy it.

Brad brought a 120 Case combine with DC engine to me to find out why it had water in the pan. Surprise...the engine is stuck. No big deal as most of the 70 Case tractors here were stuck at one time. This one for some reason is not wanting to budge. Most times overnite they will come loose, but this one is calling for some serious persuasion.

Steve, I am sorry to hear that. Sorry for you, not the motor. Don't wear out your arm or shoulders over this. Won't hurt my feelings if you throw in the towel. I didn't know it would be stuck so tight so I never ever expected it to be more than a slight inconvenience for you to take it apart, maybe a day of wrenching at most for tear down. I never intended for you to spend so much of your time on it. There's no hurry on this project from my end but you probably want it out of your yard at some point. Call me if you want to discuss options.

It doesn't help that the motor isn't sitting at chest height either, does it?
Has to be a lot of climbing up and down just to get to it.
I'm going to owe you big time for your efforts weather it comes loose or not.

Brad if it stuck while it was running it will not be a easy fix. Commonly a complete engine overhaul along with crank and injection pump work would be in the estimate to repair. Then throw in possible block work and head rebuilds the dollars will add up , very possibly quickly surpassing the value of the tractor. And that is only the engine. But if we were to always use the dollars as a guideline we know many of these ole girls would never be saved. I did not answer the question very well, it will boil down to what the unit means to the owner as far as whether to fix or not. Rod.

Brad,

It sounds similar to my 400 Super, except mine was still running. The crank was bad, so crank reground and bearings. Then pistons, sleeves and rings. Then, pressure plate and clutch. Then, water pump and radiator. Then, generator. Then, front spindle and wheel bearings. Then, injection pump. I think you get the idea. The lights worked though. LOL Don

I have a 400 Super that my wife says has to go. Engine has been rebuilt but the pump leaks down also. I shut it off at the tank and the pump inlet. Hydro is weak and the power steering is inop. If this doesn't work out, keep me in mind.

Thanks to all for the replies.
When I do get a chance to go look at her, I'll do so with the frame of mind that it's a parts tractor only.
