PTO Shield Comparison

I'm looking for the correct pto shield for my 770. I thought the one with the rounded brackets around the bolt pattern and rounded bottoms was correct but looking at pictures in the sales brochures the square shield with the sloped backside and square bottom appears to be the right one.

Maybe please could Tom or Loren or anyone else who has a 770, could you take a peek at your shield if it's original to your tractor and let me know what you have?

To make things more confusing, I also have this shield that came off my dad's '69 1030 which is also different than most of the other 30 series in my shed. I thought this one was only used on the early 30 series and 100B series. Pretty sure they did not use them on the 70 series. ???

#3 can't be off a 1030....don't have the three bolts on a 1030 to attach the shield. Western Special 930s use that one, except for the last ones. The one with the straight shield sides is what shows up in my lit..

The bolt holes aren't big enough in either of the ones you have pictured. Mine is similar to #2, but with no hole in the top, 5/8" bolt holes, and beveled lower back corners.

Brad I did not measure the bolt pattern yet but I know the second shield pic is the one that would fit. But remember at Don L's we seen some of that style with the area rounded by the 4 mounting holes. Also does anyone know why they had a hole in the top of some shields? Rod.

The top shield is from a David Brown
The shield with the hole on the top is from an eagle hitch 730-830 as the was some kind of hydraulic cap or plug that sticks down and goes in the hole in the shield

The second shield is what is on our 770s and my 1969 931. The 931 has spacers behind the shields, but it clears the pto shaft bearing housing. The spacers were factory installed. I suspect the older tractors had a larger bearing housing and the scalops were cut in the shield, (first shield pictured) to clear it without the use of the later spacers. My 930 6spd has the first shield.
Rod, the hole is where you store your extra drawpin. HeHe.

I should have looked at the 1030 because I questioned that also. The shield came out of my Grandpas barn along with the 3 point cat 2 to cat 1 spacers and the pto tube style shield/cover. I never questioned that it was from any other tractor since it sure doesn't go on the 1370 we had. ????

RG, which tractor is this picture from? This shield with the beveled lower back corners is the same as the shield on my '67 830
Western.

That's why I'm trying to figure this out. Like RG said, the rounded brackets have bolt holes that are too small but I saw that style shield on Don Ls tractor and on other 7 or 870s. I think many shields get mixed and matched over the years. I'm curious to hear from owners who still have the original shields on their 770s.

Roger, you may be right. Upon a closer comparison, the first shield has a bolt pattern an inch and a half narrower and sits an inch and a half higher. Now where in the world would I have picked up a David Brown shield?

770, serial number 8653... something, early 1970, tractor has been painted and re-decaled once, and you can see the original decal poking out in the picture. Same one here one a couple later 870s. None of the 9s and 10s are at home to look at.

The top is a DB one for certain I have a couple mangled brown ones in my scrap pile.

Thanks Loren. Does your 770 shield also have the hole on top? Or is it solid like RGMartins in his photo down below?
My tractor is ready for paint but I'm not sure I have a correct shield for the tractor.

OK Brad,,,, I have no idea what the first shield you posted is from,, I find nothing like it here, the second one with the hole is for 730CK-1030CK, that shield will Not fit "70" series with 540/1000 rpm shafts as it needs the crescent moon cut outs to clear the larger bearing/seal use on the dual speed pto units,, the last one you posted fit many tractors but can take several different backing plates depending on what it mounts on, DC/SC/VA series/ 300-930 speeds and early 730/830 EH units Have I got you confused yet?? this is what you need for your 770, the second pic shows two 30 series starting from the LH side of the pic, the RH one is 70 series like you need, I have not went to the parts book to see if the single speed pto for the 70 series the same or not and I have never seen a single speed pto on a 70 series other than the 1270-1570 and of course the 4x4 units all have only 1000 shaft

This shows the last style you posted,, that fits SC/DC/VA and the rest of the small units 300-630 And the 6 speed 930 and EH 730 830 400-800B ect

RG, thanks for getting back to me. I have never seen another shield like my first picture the way the bolt hole brackets and upper
notch are welded on but I swear I've seen the rounded cut-outs near the bolt holes on 70 series tractors. My 770 is a '72 model so
that may be the difference. Might be a running change like the number of louvers on the side panels among other things.

OK I posted a bit of incorrect info the Early 70 series have a shield With out the crest cut outs but are Not the same as a 30 series either,, Your 770 is a later one so it had the later shield with the cutouts

Dang this is a interesting question
parts breakdown link

Tom I think you have solved the mystery. I've been looking for confirmation that I need the shield with the "crescent moon cutouts" and I was hoping that the shield I had was the right one. I guess it wasn't. Anybody need a pto shield for a David Brown? Or want to swap one for a 770 ??? My email is now open.

Tom, I also have the dual pto as you described so that information fits also. Since my tractor is a '72, I'm thinking the early 770s didn't use the cutouts and it was a running change, adding to the confusion but I'm only speculating. Thank you so much for sorting this out.

Looks like we need someone to do a complete research and comparison on pto shields and print an article with pictures for one of the Case newsletters. I think Bernie B. did one some years back on all the different 3rd links for 3pt hitches, which tractors they fit with all the part numbers and pictures. Never knew there were so many variations.

Thank you for the link. I need to start using that website.
Even the round tube pto shields have two different part numbers!
