Case 580B starting problem

My case 580b construction King was sitting for two months and won't start. At first I got no reaction at all when the ignition was on and I pushed the button. I jumpered the ignition switch (guessing it was faulty) and then pushing the button would cause the engine to start cranking VERY slowly. The ground cable would also start to heat up. We determined the ignition switch was bad and purchased a new ignition switch. But in the course of everything I also determined that the starter solenoid terminal which goes between the starter switch and the push button is continuous with ground all the time (by removing the wire coming from the push button and checking resistance to ground of the bare terminal. It's not supposed to be in continuity with ground unless the connection is made thru the button, tight? So what does it mean that the ground side of the solenoid appears to be shorted to ground all the time, and would that explain the slow crank?

I hope that makes sense.
