Case 430 Problem

Hello fellow Case owners,
I have a real big problem! I just purchased a Case 430 tractor off of craigslist and I'm starting to wish that I had just bought a John Deere instead of this piece of junk! The first week that I had it it did fine, but now its giving me a lot of problems. The steering cylinders are leaking, and the three point hitch doesn't work well. It takes a long time to lift or lower anything.
If anyone has any suggestions please let me know, because if I can't get these problems fixed I might just scrap this tractor and go to the green and yellow.

Thanks,
ACG

I would be happy to purchase it for a fair price if you do not want to repair the problems, Rod. Email is open.

I have a 470. When I first got it, from my brother-in-law, the steering cylinders leaked. I replaced the seals, no more leak, and a fairly simple job. My 3 point was very slow to lift also, when I changed the filter and fluid, I found out it was 2 1/2 gallons low. Once it had the correct amount of fluid, everything works fine. Your problems may not be as simple to fix, but I wouldn't give up. People on this forum have been helpful when I had a question, I'm sure you'll find help if needed.

Yeah sounds like someone really unloaded their junk on you. I'd really like to help you out. What will you give me to haul that hunk of junk otta there? Nothing worse than to be stuck with a lemon. gobble

First off this is a case board for people who love case tractors. We all try to get along and help each other. There are peole here that have been
dealers, mechanic and farmers forever. So please ask anything you want but dont call case tractors junk.

mcg has brought it into perspective nicely. If you have specific issues tackle the small ones first and work your way up .Each experience helps you gain knowledge and a sense of accomplishment. Feel free to ask for guidance . A service manual is a great place to start. My e-mail is also open. Chuck Machinist

I tend to agree with others, if you are looking for help, you need to approach this in a much more respectful way. I read the way you wrote it and its just wrong. I think you should update your post

Just so I don't get accused of being anti Case. We had a 6 cyl 500, round nose 300 and a 930 ck. All bought
used. Great Tractors. Wish I still had all of them. In 1968, pa bought a brand new 430. Worst tractor that
ever came on the farm. It was a pile. After the new wore off, took about a month, that thing spent most of
its time sitting in the shed. Nobody would use it. Us kids wanted pa to get rid of it and buy a real
tractor but he wouldn't. That thing got more replacement parts than all the other tractors put together.
Finally after 13 years we got rid of it with a little over 600 hrs on it. Never replaced it, never missed
it.

Well as others have said, you got to adjust your attitude. Steering cylinder leaks on yellow wheeded tractors are common also.
The Case faimly here is most willing to guide you with your repairs to your 430 so that you are happy with it. 430s are good little tractors.
By the way!! I am known as the ACG here on the Case forum, not you!!,and I have 2 430s, one row crop diesel with turbo, and a utility 440 cab tractor.

Funny, as the early 430 and the 300 round nose were mechanically identical, at least for the gas. I suppose there are lemons in every make and model but I just got a 430 diesel and have two gas 300 round nose. So far all are great old tractors and get the job done.

Very slow power steering. The 300 without ps steered a lot easier. Dealer couldn't do anything with it. Clutch was so jumpy that no one would hold the wagon pole when backing to it. It was either in or out, nothing between. Transfered oil from one compartment to the other. Replaced the seal three times then finally just left the oil level equalize. Had PTO and three point hitch problems. The brakes were much better on all the other tractors including ones built in the early 50s. The only thing we didn't have problems with was the engine.

For the slow 3pth, check the hydraulic fluid. The reservoir serves as the triple range case and there is a fill near the shifter. Most of the time when I have 3pth issues, it is just low on fluid.

I'm thinking this was just a real bad lemon that we had. Still think Case had excellent Tractors. I just would never want another 430.

If you think that case is junk try
owning a 2010 John Deere. You have to
remember the age of these tractors, they
all have a lot of hours on them now.
Invest the time into figuring out
what's wrong with your Tractor and fix
it and you will learn how your Tractor
works and operates.

I don't know about the 430 but I have a 530 we bought new ( G188D Diesel 1961 model bought early 1962) and there is very little between 430 and 530 tractors. Our tractor has been a model of reliability and service. Has around 10,000 Hrs and original pistons, rings and liners and bearings but has been well serviced. Still going.

ever heard of LUCAS OIL ? go to NAPA or O riellys and get some tranny fix , and somepower steerinf leak sealer ,,. best stuff for old seals ,, it will even work in a john deer , while you are at it buy some oil additive, and fuel stabilizer ,,. I try not to call anything junk ,, but some days working with 30 -70 yr old equipment can really wear ya down ,,, but t least I can fix it as opposed to the modern b/s ...btw ,,..there are posts on how to rebuild the seals if they are to far gone they wont swell from the lucas ,..

yes,, I know a lot of folx that would get fighting mad over anyone bashin there favorite color ,.just gotta chill and realize there are times when a fellow can get exasperated, especially when he feels like he was duped by the p-owner ..however , as a ol fella gave me a lesson one time ,, when I complained his welds were not worth a chit ,, "YaCome Here bichn and complainin in front of my good customers and expect ME to drop everthing to help you rite now boy? ,..now, you cool down and watch while iteach you a few things about welding ,,. wth was ya pulling on when this broke anyway ?/ "

Well Loren, I would like to think people on this board would not lower themselves to try to tell others how they need to talk. You might keep in mind this isn't the JD board. If the poster had trashed farmers that use Case eqt, or dealers that sold Case then I could see the response. This poster was trashing a piece of steel. Not someone on here's wife or favorite dog!! I don't remember any personal attack and I sure don't think anyone on the Case Board needs to be talking down to someone just because he is mad at his own tractor. Now, really, do you?

I started out on a brand new 1963 930 my Dad and Uncle who farmed together bought when I was younger. Traded for a new 1470. Traded for a 2470. Traded for a 2670. Bought another 2670. New 1175 in 74. Case plows, combines, Rear blade, chisel, and no doubt more I don't remember. Some was mine some Dads. So I have a slight liking for Case eqt as well, but sure as he!! not enough to feel the need to dress someone down for trashing them. Bob

Guess I don't look at the tractor as just a piece of steel, it carry's the brand name, The J.I.Case Company. If he needs information being respectful in here is what this forum as prided itself on. Yes, we have had those that started things that changed what this forum was for. Guess what they are gone now. The Case forum is looked at with pride, and a friendly place. Where you can get help with issues.

Personally, I have gone through the "100s", "30"s "70"s "90"s "Magnums" and was a dealer with my Father in a dealership that spanned 40 years. Lots of intro's trips around the world with them. Farmed, and used them all. There has been weak issues on different ones that were built, but not everyone had the issues.

There was no dressing down. Just show respect to collector that have a deep love for this brand.

I agree with Ande, and Loren. You don't join yesterday with one post and talk like that. This forum is for people on here to discuss their favorite past time. CASE POWER & EQUIPMENT not to degrade a 50+ year old tractor that has been described to worked a tough life that just needs some TLC.
Sell it then to someone who cares then.......
