CASE 310 question

I have a 1956 case 310 utility. I have taken the cover off of the gear shift housing and cannot seem to get the shifter rods lined back up for it to go back on? It's the 12 inch by 12 inch metal cover over the transmission where you shift the gears. It won't go flush because something is binding underneath. Is there a correct procedure or trick to put it back on? Also how and where do I fix the seal that lets my hydrologic oil leak out. It's overflowing into the rear end gearbox fairly fast to where I have to add fluid daily as it leaks into the rear end and then out. ZAny help is appreciated!

You need to get your forks lined up to the gear slider slots (pic 1). Have the shifter (pic 2) in neutral and slid the gears until they match. The reverse fork in generally the hardest one to line up. That roll pin on the cover can hang it up also, drive it up out of the way if necessary until the cover is seated.

Migration of torque tube hydraulic oil into the transmission generally occurs through one or more of the following seals.

The most common, if you have a Eagle hitch, is the piston seals (pic 3). You can check the seals by putting some weight on the lift and see if it leaks down over night. Piston is in the assembly under the seat, just pull the cover and it comes out as a unit.

The next most likely oil migration source is through the pto shaft/main shaft seal (pic 4+)located at the front of differential cavity. While you have the lift piston assembly out check for oil leakage through the seal. Ensure the torque tube sump is full and it helps to run the engine a few minutes and shutdown, dry the seal area and watch for oil seepage. The slightest smear of oil leak will be a lot of oil over time. If you are not using the eagle hitch, the this seal is probable blown all the way out or the housing that holds the seal has come adrift out of the main shaft.

The least likely leak is the transmission main drive shaft O.D. seal at the front of the transmission. Requires split.

Joe Thank you!!! You don't know how much this will help me. I will try to work on it this weekend and let y'all know what I find here. thanks again!!!

Well after several hours of trying to get the gears shifting forks aligned I finally got it. I think the problem was I took the cover off while it was in reverse. I need some other help now. Haven't ran tractor in several years. It cranked right up but it now surges with the governor like revs up then revs down and almost quits then it revs up and down again? I did have to replace the clogged fuel filter with another smaller one. Is it maybe not getting enough fuel?
