970 retard valves

recently bought a 970. few bugs to work out but nothing major. shifts ok. and doesnt slip. changed fliuds and filters... adjusted inching pedal as per book . . issue now is and was somewhat before . is when downshifting from ps 2 to 1 kinda locks up. and engine will labor for a few seconds ... book shows a special monitor to adjust the retard valves . anyone know of another way.... i have no clue who would have the monitor. required. thanks .

Find the retard screw nearest to the C-3 cast on the top of the control valve cover. Back it out 1/4 turn and try the downshift from 2 to 1 again. If it still labors more the a fraction of a second back it out a little again. Normally a half turn will get that labor to go away. Back it out to far and you will develop a hesitation if downshifting under load. This adjustment is very sensitive to hyd. oil temp. Rod.
