splitting my 511b

Finally getting to splitting my 511, working 55-60 hrs. a week sure is interfering with my personal time. I'm splitting it between the torque tube and trans, leaking hydraulic into the tranny. It wasn't the seal on the PTO shaft so I need to go deeper. My question is I've got it loose but I can only get it about 1/8" apart, and it will not move anymore. The service manual isn't very clear, it shows a standard 4 speed coming apart, I have the triple range. Is there something in the hand clutch that could be holding me up? What am I missing?
Thanks, Dan

There is a good chance you don't need to split the tractor there to fix a leak of hydraulic fluid into the rear end. There are three primary points of potential failure when hydraulic oil is showing up in the rear end / transmission cavity:

1. The seal(s) in the rockshaft piston.

2. The seal on the aft end of the main shaft that provide a seal between the PTO shaft (inner shaft) and the main shaft (outer shaft).

3. The o-ring and seals on the front of the transmission main shaft.

I would check the first two possibilities first. They seem to be the most prevalent cause of the problem you are facing....

The seals in the rockshaft piston are easily replaced by removing the transmission top plate, and disassembling the the eagle hitch rock shaft, and gently (I use air pressure) to force the piston out of the cavity to get at the seal(s). There are several different pistons, with different seal/scraper combinations, so you won't know what you have until you get it apart.

The seal at the end of the main shaft can be accessed by removing the same transmission top plate, and the PTO assembly at the rear of the tractor (you will need to drain the fluid out of the rear end cavity). The long PTO shaft needs to be removed to the rear. There is a double-lipped seal is contain within "Seal Housing" that is driven on the end of the main shaft that protrudes slightly into the rear-end cavity. This seal can be extracted from the housing while still on the shaft, but it a challenging place to work between the two bull, and ring gears in the rear end. If you are able to replace the seal without removing the house, make sure the housing is completely and securely driven on to the main shaft when your done....

The seals and o-ring at the front of the main shaft must be accessed by the split you're attempting. The PTO assembly at the rear of the tractor needs to be removed. The triple range assembly (if installed) will need to be unbolted from the transmission casting. The seal housing is removed off the front of the main shaft, which will expose the o-ring on the exterior of the housing and the seals inside. The two seals are installed back to back, with the lips facing in opposite directions.

One possible reason you cannot get the split done is the main shaft ahead of the triple range is splined to facilitate this split... It's possible that splined connection is not coming free.
