1952 Case thermostat change

02/06/16 I have had the 52 Case since 1975. Have used it winter and summer. I have neglected to keep up with antifreeze and thermostat changes. The only thing I did is have the radiator soldered 15 years ago and add antifreeze here and there. My question is: when I drain the antifreeze and install the thermostat, put everything back together, do I put a gallon of antifreeze in and start the engine and wait for the thermostat to open and then fill with the rest of the antifreeze or do I put all the antifreeze in and wait til the level drops and the fill.
*************The funny thing about this tractor ever since I owned it is if you fill the radiator to the top it will always push out antifreeze until you have about 3 inches from the top.

My 53 DC4 and my 51 SO runs a couple inches down also. If you fill it with anti freeze it will spit it out? When I have had the water drained, I just fill it slow and start it up and let it idle and add more anti freeze till it is full. Dick

If you are in a cold climate don't forget to run the engine to circulate the solution so it doesn't freeze. I fill till a couple inches from the top and start the engine to circulate.

A neat way to solve the spit out problem, and also to improve cooling. if you work these old tractors. is to solder in a 3# pressure relief valve on the base of the overflow tube. Obviously your cap has to seal tight and the system can have no leaks, but boy does it work. I have them in on both of my SCs. The very slight pressurization will harm nothing and will definitely improve cooling flow, particularly around the exhaust valve guide area which is always a hot or dead spot on non-pressurized systems. My 2 came from a fellow who advertises in the Early Ford V8 Times. They really work on 30s vintage flatmotor Fords. Skip Haney email: [email protected]

The way I'd add, drain everything to get rid of old coolant. Antifreeze does not last forever. The freeze protection part does, but the other additives, water pump lube, electrolysis protection rust inhibitors, etc etc go away. Because there is no way to totally drain the system, to insure enough antifreeze, I have to know the capacity. The SC is 4 gallons, I need 2 gallons of antifreeze. I add the 2 gallons of pure first, then top with water and of course running to thoroughly mix the solution. From then on you can comfortably add 50/50 mixtures to top off as needed.

02/08/16 Are the rust inhibitors and protections in the antifreeze or do you have to buy them. I drained my old antifreeze and it tested -40 with the ball test. I tested new 50/50 from 2 different companies and it tested 0 even though the jugs said -34. So I put my old back in and added new Pure strength mix. I won't buy any more 50/50, my tractor sits outside.

I mix straight antifreeze with water so mixture is -40. Then pour into rad. Start it up until thermostat starts opening and top it up with same mixture. Continue to let it run and topping it up until its full. 10-20 minutes does it. The next day, I'll top it up with same -40 mixture while its cold. Where I live with the 4 distinct seasons we run a -40 mixture year-round. The antifreeze I buy has all the ingredients already for lubrication and rust inhibitors. Mixture will seperate to a certain degree if you dont start it for a year or more. Definitely start it up once inawhile to keep it well mixed.

I make sure all our water cooled engines have overflow tanks for fluid being pushed out. Usually fluid is sucked back in as it cools. Our snowmobiles do not have overflow tanks. The small plasric tanks they have, have a max fill line for cold to allow for expansion, yet still an overflow tube. My Case 530 appears to have overflow metal tube broken off below rad cap. I'll double check to see if it's actually broken. I know my B250 only had an overflow metal tube with rubber tube going down side of rad to ground. I rerouted\lengthened rubber hose to overflow tank in battery compartment. I just use a one liter oil bottle. Works good!
