I pulled the tranny cover on the 931 today. It looks really good for all the hrs on it, but it has one problem. The speedo drive cable twisted off at the very end where it's square end slips into the drive gear. As you know the speedo drive gear is on the front of the pinion shaft under the range gear shaft. How the heck do I get the tube that encases the flex shaft out to pull the broken off peice out of the drive gear. I can't fit my hand and a wrench down to take the bolt and retaining clip out to access it. I sure don't want to have to pull the clutch/bell housing off the tranny to get to it.

Loren,

I checked my shop manual and all it says is to remove the tube. I wonder if you have to pull up on it to disengage it from the bottom casting and then drop the tube down to get it out of the case. I hate to say it but I think you have to pull the bell housing off to get at the bolt and set screw that hold the housing with the drive gear to the bearing carrier. Like you said I don't think you can get to the bolt and set screw from the top with the range shaft and gears in the case.

My smart-aleck answer is to calibrate a bicycle speedometer-odometer to a tractor wheel like I have on the tractor ride tractor I use in summertime. Or get someone with really small hands.. LOL

I was faced with the same problem about 18yrs ago with my 930 diesel. Couldnt get to it at all. I even asked the local dealer they said if you want to get to the speed-o you got to split it. So I left it alone.

Loren: That Tube will slide up out. At that point, I would think with some clever maneuvering, you can get the piece out. AND.........after seeing your custom fabs, we are talking to the "Man of Clever"!!

Whatever you have to do, please take some photos to share. Mine is broken somewhere in there too and I would like to see what I am in for before I decide whether it's worth fixing. At this point I don't have a need to go in there for anything else.

The base of the tube has a retaining clip on it with a capscrew holding it in place. I can't get any kind of a wrench onto the capscrew.
