Yesterday got a chance to work on my project a little bit. when i was cleaning the rear Head i found a crack in one of the cylinders. it starts in the seat of the intake valve and goes to the seat in the exhuast valve. is this a crack I can run with or does it write this head off? Thanks in advance for advise

I have seen engines come into the shop with that problem. Ideally it should be repaired especially if it is a working tractor. If the crack extends to the water jacket and leaks coolant into the cylinder certainly you will not want to reinstall it, there are shops that specialize i crack repair by welding or pinning the crack, these are options. The first thing to do is to have the head pressure checked at an automotive machine shop to determine if it is cracked to water then you will be better able to make a decision.

Just an FYI. The Fel-Pro CS 8212 head set is for a 30 series engine and not the hundred series even though it is listed in the book for that application. As is the Victor 3103 set. Everything will work except the head gaskets. They are available from case for $65.00/each. I considered trimming the holes in the 30 series gasket to fit the hundred series stud pattern but didn't. The only one that might give a problem is the stud between the two cylinders near the oval water passage and I think some good sealer in that area would have solved that problem.

I concur with Mel. Save yourself from future possible frustration and problems and have both heads crack and pressure tested. If there are visible cracks in one cylinder there may be more that you can't see.

Midwest Cylinder and Head in Nevada, Iowa tested and repaired both heads that had cracks for my 400 diesel. They specialize in this type of work. It hurt to pay the bill but was money well spent in the long run.
