I am looking at buying a Case SC, the magneto was replaced (as old one was stolen) but the new one was timed. How hard is it to time the magneto and what does it entail?

SHORT version (that applies to the great majority of magneto-equipped engines)...

Time the mag so it's impulse trips when #1 cylinder is at TDC on the compression stroke (hopefully find timing marks that indicate this, as well).

If timing marks can't be found, typically you can locate TDC on an OHV engine by inserting a plastic straw into the #1 sparkplug hole, letting it rest on the piston, then slowly cranking the engine to the straw rises to it's highest level and BOTH the intake and exhaust valves on that cylinder are CLOSED.

Then, starting with the high-tension terminal the rotor was nearest to when the impulse tripped as #1, arrange the remaining spark plug wires in firing order in the cap, in the direction the rotor turns.

You want the impulse to trip AT or SLIGHTLY AFTER TDC, or the engine will "kick back" likely damaging the (electric or human) starter.
 
all magnetos are basically the same. just bolt the mag on. if the wires from the mag are going to the correct plug then the mag will be timed correctly or 180 degrees out. the mag only has two positions so if you get no fire any cylinder remove mag rotate 180. if the mag is 180 degrees out every firing of the mag will be to a cylinder that's at TDC on the exhaust stroke!
timing mark below right brake pedal on the side of the bellhousing opposite the starter. remove square head 3/8"pipe plug there are three marks about a half inch apart on the flywheel the mark that's not a letter but a shallow hole is the mag timing mark. good luck!
 
Just one addition to Bob's comments as you seem to not be familiar with mags. When the impulse trips you will hear a click.
