Need some advice on a 930

So a few weeks ago I picked up this 1965 930 Comfort King with the 8 speed transmission. Bought it as a non runner for $500. Price included a Category 2 quicktatch on the 3 point so I really only got $250 in the tractor. I was told it has transmission issues. Owner couldn't remember all of the details since they hadn't used the tractor in 3 years but thought something was wrong with the high/low range. Changed all the fluids and filters on the engine and got the engine running. Engine runs great, very little blow by out the breather, oil pressure was a solid 30 psi on a new gauge. Started easily with the block heater plugged in. Doesn't smoke (burn oil) but needs exhaust manifold gaskets and possibly a exhaust manifold.

Drove it around and discovered that the high/low range does in fact have issues. Pulled the cover off the transmission and discovered that the high range gear on the input shaft has come loose on the shaft and chewed it's way through the web between the range box and the 4 speed transmission. Everything else works, hydraulics, pto, 3 point.

I obviously need a new transmission case at the minimum to fix it. So my dilemma is do I fix it by replacing the transmission case or the entire back half of the tractor or do I part it out. I really do not like the idea of parting it out since the rest of the tractor is in very good shape and I was hoping to use it on my 8' two stage snow blower but it ain't going to happen this winter.

Does anyone have any ideas on what a housing would cost or have a lead on one? I'm located in central Iowa.

Thanks,

Eli

you need a tranny from a 930 or 1030 , doubtful if you can find one for another 500 bux ,. but they are out there ,.or ,I need your tractor here in southern /ind for the motor,. I would be happy to double your money simply for the engine I need for my tired 930...

I have a neighbor with a 930 junked out already with the trany left. It has the pto housing off so I'm
not sure I would swap the unit, but it would have all the parts in it you want. If you interested I'll
ask what he would take gor it. I'm getting the wheel castings off of it for my 1030.

I'll be home wed-fri. I'll try to remember to ask him. Might help if you call me thurs to remind me.

Make that a double WOW. First for me also. The PO must have been one of those guys who walked around with those big ear muffs on all the time.

Jon sounds good. I'll try to touch base with you on Thursday evening.

The odd thing is that this mess is quiet. I'm guessing that any noise is masked by the oil being slung around in the transmission. There is no noise until you try to change gears and that sounded/felt normal if you don't wait for things to stop turning.

Based on what I was told I figured that the fork on the high/low shift collar slid on the rail and wasn't engaging the shifting collar correctly. Guess not!!

I think what happened is the nut on the input staff was not staked or the staking washer was forgotten and the nut worked it's way off. The gear then walked it's way back into the web of the case and started wearing it away. I'm not sure where the front snap ring went on the bearing. It does show some evidence of the bearing spinning in the housing for a short time. It also wore the end off of the 1-2 shift rail. I'm going to dump the oil today and see what other surprises are lurking in there.

The biggest thing that I'm trying to figure out is dealing with the contaminated oil that has been flowing through the hydraulic system. I'm guessing that I will need to completely disassemble all of the components and clean them or is there an easier solution?

Thanks again,

Eli

Yeah Thad that was the first words out of my mouth also. I had a guy that wanted to sell me a parts 1030 but I lost the ph. number, he wanted $800

I am interested in the tractor if you decide you are going to part it. I know that others are interested too - just let me know.
Send me an email.
Thanks Wade
