400 case black smoke

Thanks for the info on bleeding the fuel filters. It runs good, idles decent and no smoke coming out when idling but when I put it under a little load it blows alot black smoke. Can I turn the injector pump down? I think it used to be a pulling tractor. Thanks

you can make a tool to adjust it out of a fence staple, it should smoke very little under load, some thinks it looks cool to roll coal with a naturally aspirated tractor but in reality you are drowning the fire and reducing horse power, we had an 88 Oliver dsl. on a dyno and gained around 5hp by reducing the smoke

Glad you got it running. It can be turned down but I'd have a pump shop do it so that it can be set correctly. They can also make sure the other settings are correct, rpm, no fuel delivered in the stop position, etc.

Just curious have you checked the oil bath air filter and the rest of the intake system for blockages? When grandpa got the 400 that I now own it wouldn't run. The cup on the oil bath air filter was full of water and frozen.

I'd second getting it on a PTO dyno and adjust the fuel stop plate back to turn the fuel down. Just hope it was not turned up to help correct a hot hard start problem caused by a worn hydraulic head.
