Case Nutty 1660, right on the nail, now what?

Case Nutty 1660; I posted earlier that my 580b hydraulics had gone out and you responded that the pump spindles were probably damaged. YOU WERE RIGHT!!

The pump shaft looks like a new bolt, no teeth (spindles). The coupler from the engine looks almost worn out too, with spindles half gone. Therefore, some important questions before I proceed:

1. How difficult is it to get to the coupler's four bolts on the engine?? After taking the pump off, I noticed there are heavy frame parts that may need to come off to get to the bolts, and even more, to get the part out of such a tight space. WHICH IS THE BEST WAY TO TAKE OUT THE COUPLER BOLTS AND ALL???

2. Regarding the pump shaft, I see there are 6 bolts around the shaft area. Any thing I should be looking for while taking it apart to replace the shaft??

3. Advice on possible alternative - it seems that on the engine coupler there are still good spindles on the back part of the coupler. If I am able to find a longer new shaft and cut it long enough for it to go dip into the old coupler, would this work?? (Probably the cheap and lazy way of looking at it, but just wondering).

Finally, just for you to know that your earlier response was quick, clear, professional, and right on the nail. I was able find the problem with ease. Awesome!! Thanks again. David

I had a similar problem on a Ford 4000 I was able to turn the coupling around and use the teeth that were not worn down. Maybe this will work for you

I have been down this road more times than you can imagine, the coupler can be changed without to much trouble, forget the shaft repair, by the time you buy a new shaft and seal and gasket kit you will have to much money in it to be practical. Those new pumps are very reasonable.

mEl has been down the same road as me, the coupler on the crank pulley is not bad to change at all if you pull the radiator out first, that is not a bad job really either, it will slid straight up and out then you can reach the drive coupler easy, pump is not as bad as it looks to change

Thank you all for your good advice and ideas. Rigged up a puller, will use it tomorrow. Have checked on new pump and coupler. Lot more reasonable on e-bay and other sites; not bad on shipping also (between $15 to $20). All in all, almost half the price of Case dealer.

Thank you again. David
