Is the gearbox on Case 1494 synchronized? I red somewhere the the late models are synchronized, but not the early. Is that correct?
I guess a white Case 1494 would be a early model.

All David Browns from 1972 or so until the end have syncro gears(885, 1210, 1410, 990, 995, all the 90 and 94 series unless a hydrashift). The way they are built, it will let you shift 1 to 2 to 3 going up and 3 to 2 going down. The underdrive, and High-Low range shifts are still require stopping to shift, or knowing your machine extremely well.

I have never torn apart a hydra shift 1494. Link above is the parts break down for a last production 1494 Hydrashift range gears. No Syncros that I see. Not sure why you would want or need syncros on the range box.

1st is crawler gears, 2nd is field gears, 3rd is road speeds.

Booth gear 2 and 3 is used in the field. Gear 2 and hydrashift 4 is faster than gear 3 and hydrashift 1.
You have to stand still when you shift up or down between 2 and 3.
You also have to start on hydrashift 1 when you change gear.
In traffic the synchronized gearbox on 1690 is better than the hydrashift. You have to start from hydrashift 1 everytime you press the clutch down.
If you are heavy loaded, it could be difficult to start on gear 3.
