Diesel Engine Oil

All year long I run 15w40 diesel engine oil in my 2003 duramax, and my International McCormick Diesel B250. I figure the same for my Diesel 188 in my mid 60's Case 530CK. Im contemplating about running straight 10W diesel oil for the winter. Lately its been close to 32 degrees F. Here in Canada, -5 to plus 5 Celcius.
In a old gas single cylinder tractor we have we run 30W in the summer and 5w30 in the winter. What you recommend for an old diesel 188 in around 32 degrees F plus or minus 5 degrees?

I run 15-40 Diesel Engine oil all year long. When the temperature hits anything below freezing and the water in the rain barrels do not thaw (Dawson Creek BC Canada)I plug the block heater in and some have a circulating heater. case 830 8 speed diesel...Case 610B Case-O-Mastic, Massey Ferguson 35 Diesel 3 cylinder Perkins. A 15W40 oil has the characteristics of both a 15 weight oil for colder weather and a 40 weight oil for warmer weather. Multi viscosity oil was designed so you didn't have to switch back and forth between winter and summer. Put a good multi viscosity oil like the 15W40 in and run it year round. The owners manual for your 530 recommends a 10W oil because multi viscosity oils were not available when the tractor was built.

Hi, I had a 1965 Case CK with 188D. I had it for
30yrs. In summer I used 30w and winter 10w30.
Where are you? Near Wm lake? Ed Will Oliver BC

I live just outside of 100 Mile House. I don't realky need to use my 530 in the winter especially when its -10 C or colder. I may use it to move some snow piles that my plow truck pushed up when its closer to 0 C or above zero. There is a two pin connector above power steering reservoir. I believe thats the block heater.

Is home North off 100-mile or South around Lone Bute? That area elevation is around 3,500>3,700 FT. I know it gets cold there! I was Stationed at the GAS COMPRESSOR STATION on Highway 24. Two 16,000 HP Rolls Royce Turbines, Models "SPEY"

I live on a 10 acre hobby farm in the Forest Grove area. We live on a north facing slope so we still have snow when right in Forest Grove there is none in the spring. I believe we are 500-1000 ft lower than Lone Butte.

i would be sticking with the 15-40. you dont want to be putting a 5 wt oil in a diesel or you will be knocking the brgs. out. i would not even use a 10 wt either. my duramax likes 15-40 year round. over 300k and it has only had castrol 15-40 in it from new. i remember when the oldsmobile diesel 5.7 came out there was a bulletin out saying not to use 5 wt oil or brgs will go out. thats a long time ago. it wasnt much of an engine though as every thing would wear out in those engines.

We always ran 15W40 in dads 430 diesel until cold weather and then switched to 10W in winter . I understand the characteristics of multi-viscosity oil but in real cold temps. 10W made it turn over so much easier and that always made the little case engine start better. Also this time of
year you are more than likely not working it hard either so when it warms up put 15W40 back in it. Our little 430 was a daily use loader tractor and used that way for YEARS.

I'm just going to stay with 15/40 during this mild weather and not use it when its -10 Celcius and colder. Heres a pic of what I think is the old block heater yet it appears to be in head:

that's what I would do ,,. you are always safe with 15w40 ,.this question comes up for debate often , and it is always good to hear everyones views .
