1175 transmission noise

Hello, I always go to this sight for insight on tractor questions don't usually have to post to find an answer, but... -Fellow has an 1175 for sale, says the high range first gear started making a popping noise when he was going down a hill. Said it sounded like a gear tooth out maybe or two gears tapping. He's continued to use the tractor without issue for 4 years by avoiding that gear. Said the other day someone came to look at it and it didn't make the noise when they drove it. Tractor has 8,000 hours and had an engine overhaul at 6,000. Wondering what your thoughts were on the possible causes and potential costs and value. I thought the 8-speed manuals were pretty bullet proof...? Thanks.

It may have had an interlock tube in the shift basket fall off the 1-2 rail and allowing the fork to cock and teeth to rub. Hard saying sitting here at my puter. Best plan is to pull the tranny cover and have a looksee.

Has a hard rop canopy, like a glassless and doorless cab, guess this would have to be lifted? Split to work on? Tractor looks straight and clean, original. Know it's always a gamble, just wondering what the scope of potential issues are because also know it'll probably be gone soon at the asking price...

No you don't have to pull the 4 post canopy. The tranny cover will slide out from under the platform on the RH side by removing the filter bracket and RH front platform mount. Not that big a deal on an 1175.
If you need toutering, post back.
