504 comprestion

Have rebuilt a case 504 and it has 320 psi of compression in each hole.My question is this enough compression for this engine.

What type of tester are you useing? You need to account for the volume you are adding with the tester. If you are using one that has much of a added air volume you must fill. You will have a much lower psi reading. 320 might not be bad if your tester is that way.

I am with Thad on this. IIRC the service manual shows the gauge right on top of the injector replacement. Thad steered me away from building one out of a used injector because of the volume gained after gutting. However the numbers seem low. Tom

Not familiar with it. Is the plumbing to the gauge on it liquid filled, or just air. If air, it is adding to the volume of the combustion chamber giving the lower readings.

Hawk: Just stumbled on your question here. 350 pounds is not enough. Who re-built the engine? I have seen woodchucks grind valves & seats all to he[[ and ruin compression because of excessive valve recession from the grinding.

The heads wear rebuilt and the valve resection brought back to 0 and piston checked at deck hight for clearens and fall with in spec.

Ya when the temp is about 0 deg. Celsius it needs a bit of ether to get some heat to get going. This shouldn't be happening, all the components are new. The timing is dead on at the cam and crank and pump put in at25 Deg. BTD center.

Hawk: Ok. Lets analyize this. At your 0-C,or our 32F, the 504 should start unassisted. But if you only had 350 pounds compression, she wouldn't start at all. So, I think your compression is better than that. 0 valve recession is excellent. Upon assembling the engine, was the ring end gap checked on all rings? Very important. How are the batteries & connections? That 504 needs 2 well charged Group 30's or 31's so she spins fast.
