Case 630 Diesel Question

Have a chance to buy a fairly descent Case 630 Diesel and wondered if they are much of a sought after tractor? Don't know much about them and they are not that common in our area. I guess my question is how common are the eagle hitch 630 diesels? Thanks - Bob

Per Tractordata.com, 1,181 were made. Similar to a 530/430, but bigger tires and a bigger hp engine. I have one and like it.

Not real uncommon tractors. Only made from 1960-1963 .Almost all had eagle hitch, the western version I think were available without and much more uncommon. I really like them and find them to be very tough little tractors. Best of all if you are in a hurry to get somewhere they have a 24 mph road gear whoo hoo !!

Of the roughly 4500 630s made from 1960 to 1963, 60 percent were diesels. The 630 was discontinued before the draft-o-matic 3-pt was introduced, so a very high percentage would have been equipped with the eagle hitch.

The 630 was a logical extension of the very capable "Rock Island" series of Case tractors that started with the 300 in 1956. The problem is that the drive train that was designed for about 30 HP was challenged with the 630 that could be made to exceed 50 HP. The other problem was the 630 and 730 were too close in HP and the 730 was built on a much more capable chassis and could be had at the time for not a lot more money. In it's day, I would have much preferred the 630 for chore duty or light field work, but the 730 would have easily won if the tractor's primary duty was field work.

To directly answer your question, I do think the 630 is desirable, if for no other reason than it it was made in relatively small numbers and it was as far as Case attempted to push the design. The 188 diesel was on of the toughest and most economical little engines of it's time.

BYW - I am a little biased because I own a 1963 630 diesel row crop.... - Joe

yeah boy ,, the triple rangers are fast ,I have 3 430 diesels , who needs a 4 wheeler , when you can take a tractor with 3 pt hitch // just traded away my 630 gasser for 530, 8 speed diesel ,, argueably, not as fast but all 8 speeds are very adequate,,.
