470 - 570 puzzler!!

Late 430-470 Late 530-570 Service Manual shows a Seal ahead of the A37606 Bearing in the PTO Bearing & Seal Carrier on the back end of the Tranny Main shaft. This is in addition to the A37605 Seal behind the bearing. All the late 430 530 & 470 570 Parts Books I have looked at, show the A37605 Seal, but not the Seal in front of the bearing. Can anyone help me out? The OD is smaller where the Service Manual shows the mystery seal.

John, I pulled my 470/570 service manual this evening and was surprised that the design of the oil seal housing clearly changed with the later models. It appears the later design was pressed in place in the casting, as opposed to being pressed/driven on to the end of the main shaft. Since it is not pressed onto the main shaft, a seal is necessary. The seal in front of the oil seal housing seals the main shaft, and the aft one seals the PTO shaft. What is interesting is the new needle bearing inside of the oil seal housing, and the bushing from the previous design both support the PTO shaft within the main shaft.

I was not aware of this change in design until reading your post tonight and looking it up. Frankly, it looks like Case got it right with this later design. The earlier design where the oil seal housing was driven on the end of the main shaft left much to be desired.

Thanks for pointing out this change. One can learn something new every day here....

Joe: I don't have the Manual here, but I thought the mystery seal is in the carrier. In addition to the bearing, is a bushing ahead of it. Can't find it in the parts breakdown anyways.

John,

The first page below is out of the 470/570 service manual and the second is from the 470/570 parts manual. Something is not adding up here. The parts manual depicts the same design as was used on the earlier models. The service manual shows what I assume is a later design with two seals and a needle bearing.

Notice "Inset F" where item 5 is the PTO shaft, 20 is the oil seal housing, 21 is the front seal, 22 is the rear seal, and 19 is the needle bearing. The front seal is riding on the the main shaft, not the PTO shaft. What isn't obvious from "Inset F" is where the bushing or wear sleeve (item "18") is positioned.

The other puzzle is why are the service and parts manuals not showing the same design. The only place I can find the design with two seals and a needle bearing is in the service manual. - Joe

I just re-read the service manual again, and item 18 is no longer a bushing like in the old design. It is now a sleeve that is pressed on the aft end of the main shaft, and the new seal (item 21) rides on it. The sleeve is depicted in Inset F by the thin piece with multiple "\" markings. The thicker, longer piece with multiple "/" markings is the mainshaft.

There is no longer a need for a bushing, because it is replaced by the needle bearing. - Joe
