I have owned this tractor for many years, and always thought it to be a David Brown 995. Now, because of this website, I believe it is a 996, because it has a hand clutch. Serial numbers on tractor go back to 1975. The tractor is in nice shape & I want to sell it. Not sure if it is worth more or less than a 995. How can I be sure what it is without the owners manual? Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks!

should be stamped 996 in the serial # area on the top of the frame below the power steering pump,,, all we ever ordered was the 996 units, we liked the control much better with the hand clutch,,, all had 995 on the hood decal I may be wrong but then its been 40 plus years

This one too has the 995 hood decals, so I am kind of confused. But thanks for the serial numbers identification. I can take a closer look....

the 995/996 were the "same" tractor other than the hand clutch option for the pto,,, they called them both a 995 on the hood,, that is why you need the serial number when ordering parts, the 995 has a two stage foot clutch for both the transmission and the pto, step part way down and pto stays running but travel stops, step all the way down and both pto and travel are stopped, a 996 has a single stage foot clutch, which only stop travel, the hand clutch controls pto

Get your free owner's manual for the 995 / 996 off of the following website:

Hardly an expert, and only respected by those who don't know me well.

Same stickers, same tractor except for the clutch. The short explanation was that the Brits thought we weren't smart enough to keep track of a bunch of model numbers. The rest of teh world used the 996 decals. They did the same with the 1210/1212 and 1410/1412(syncro versus powershift), only using 1210 and 1410 decals.

Not much difference in the value to me. Some prefer the 2 stage clutch, others the hand clutch. Even though the hand clutch was an upgrade, for most utility work, I prefer the foot clutch for most jobs.
