Checking level of oil in VAC Rear End.

Do I just set the plug down over the hole and then pull it out to check the oil level in the rear end, or do I have to screw it in, then back out to check the oil??

I beleive the correct check is to screw it in. If I'm wrong someone will shurly correct me.
Thats how I have always checked the oli level.
