SC breather tube

Is there supposed to be anything in the breather tube on an SC? Mine had steel wool in it which eventually rusted the tube shut and filled the valve cover with condensation.

generallyas far as I know ,,NO ,,. the tube came hollow from factory ,,.nuthin wrong in my book to fill it with oil saokt steel wool ,,, ,

Hit an automotive parts store and pick a foam air cleaner (small engine stuff) and fasten it with a clamp or tie wrap. I've used this system on older stuff for years, it's amazing the crud that collects in those filters. I use a filtron washable, oilable filter that's about 6" long and lays, out of sight, on the valve cover.

For an original looking tractor, the are no good answers. If you insert steel wool it will plug fast and not much moisture it will be rusted. If you like this kind of an answer at least go buy a brass or copper scrub pad ( i use about twelve of these in the air cleaner to replace steel wool). Another answer would be to slip over a rubber hose and run it down behind the air cleaner. It would flow as needed and dust, dirt and water would pretty much stay in the bottom foot and cost near nothing. the answer i like is to attach a hose fitting to the intake tube or the air cleaner itself like later model vehicles. this closes the link with outside dirt and moisture. some would say this method will suck the oil out of the engine. first this vent tube in not direct into the crankcase (like the early chevy six cylinder) and the CFM demand on this engine is light compared to size of air cleaner assembly and you can check the oil cup regular to note rising oil levels. If your motor breathes hard and the tube becomes blocked, you will probably have a leaking valve cover soon after..............have a great day! chuck.
