Case identification question

Hi All, When I was a kid my father owned a VAC 13. When we were making hay my dad would borrow our neighbors Case and I remember it as being a VAO. In my searches trying to verify that it was a VAO I come across something that puzzles me. All of the pictures I see of the VAO have the transmission shift lever coming vertically out of the transmission similar to our VAC. But the tractor my dad borrowed had the shift lever running horizontally, front to back with neutral being the lever straight up and down and sliding forward or backward. I seem to recall it being a 3 speed, but I could be mistaken. My question did the VAO have a shift pattern similar to what I remember and described or was it something else. I know it was a Case and like I said I seem to remember it being a VAO. Thanks for your help and information.

The S-series, D-series, and C-series tractors all had the shifter configuration that you describe. The VAO has a short bent lever, but it shifts the same way as the other VA-series tractors.

Thanks for the reply. Hmmm. Apparently it wasn't a VAO. It was a lower slung tractor similar to what looks like a orchard VAO. The seat was set back and you got on from the rear. Large fenders but not the sweeping sheet metal of the orchard tractors. I guess I'll have to check into the S, D and C series tractors to see what it may have been. Thanks again.

It sounds like Mike is right. It could have been an early D standard or DO orchard model. They are almost identical. Or an S or SO or maybe even an R or RO. Don

Well looking through TractorData.com I would say the closest I see is a D Standard series but the fenders as I recall were similar to what the C series had. It was the Case orange and not gray. Well I probably won't know for sure what it was unless I would go back to the barn where they stored it (It still stands) and found it still there. Highly unlikely though. I think of that tractor every time I go past the barn. Thanks for your information and directions.

Was it hand clutch or foot clutch? We're the brakes under the axel or in f not of the axel? Early D's had big fenders like the C

I don't recall about the brakes but the clutch....maybe a hand clutch. If it had a hand clutch did it also have a pedal clutch? This was back in the late 50s early 60s. The reason I recall it having larger fenders was I dented one of them while backing up a hay rake. I recall my dad being somewhat disappointed with me  over that.
